Hi
There is a lot of debate about where the name Cann originates. There is a village in
Dorset England called Cann, but this either originates from the inhabitants and families
called Cann or from an old english place name. One of the most likley sources is from the
French town called Caen (sounds like Cann when spoken. Supporters of William the Conquere
were given lands as gifts when he invaded Engald. Many names were similar to John de Caen
(John of Caen); eventually the de was dropped and spelling changed to names like John Can
or John Cann.
