Try contacting the Sullivan County NY Genealogical Society to see what they
have in the way of early county records. Perhaps County or State Census
would have more information than the Federal Census. They also might have
specific information on this family -- because County's kept more detailed
records. Since John was born in 1849, it probably meant that his father
fought in the Civil War and maybe applied for a pension later on. I am told
that in the Pension papers often times they list family members along with
the battles they participated in. You may be able to access them by typing
in your general search engine: *Sullivan County NY Genealogical Society*.
It will get you a number of areas to search.
Also there is a Canfield Association run by Genevive Canfield in Kansas, I
believe, that captures all Canfield information offered. She is not on the
computer, but I am sure some of the list members have her address so that
you can write her with your query. Perhaps she can zero in on your family
in that county and in that time period. Worth a try. Good hunting. Sandy
Childs in Calif.

This is all I know from the 1900 census for UT. He was born
abt
1849. No parents name or county. John Canfield. I don't know
when or
where
he died or if they were divorced. On one census she said she was
widow,
then
on the other census she was divorced. This has been a big BRICK Wall
for
my
cousins that are doing research with me.
Thank you
