Looking for evidence of the Elijah E. Canfield family in Clay Co in early
1860's [my gr-gr-grandfather]
I have two pieces of evidence of this, so far:
1] Elijah's son John Canfield, my gr-grandfather, born about summer of 1861,
from ages on various census reports and on marriage license applications,
said on one of those marriage apps that he was born in Clay Co, IL.
2] Found a record of a Minor Canfield, resident of "Flora, IL", which I
believe is in Clay Co., enlisting in a Missouri regiment of the Union Army;
no enlistment date found yet. John had an older half-brother named Minor,
and I believe this record to be that of my gr-gr-uncle. I have applied for
but not yet received Minor's military records, which may go a little further
to clarify that situation. [There were several other men named Minor in this
extended clan also]
Elijah E Canfield & [2nd] wife Sarah Griggs Canfield are in Ripley Co
Indiana for 1860 census and in Fayette Co IL in 1870. In Montgomery Co IL in
1880 with 3rd wife Nancy Greer Canfield. Minor is with them in 1860, but not
later. John is with them in 1870 & 1880, and I have "lost" him shortly
after
the birth of my grandfather Joseph Canfield in 1891 in Christian County,
when John and my gr-grandmother split up and presumably divorced [they both
re-married within a year or so].
Can anyone in the Canfield lists or the Clay County lists provide more
information on the Clay County connection?
