Vol 4 of "Colonial Families of the United States", George Mackenzie ed. (New
York: 1907), has Samuel, son of Matthew & Sarah (Treat) Camfield, married
Elizabeth Willoughby, dau. of Francis Willoughby who was Deputy Governor of
Mass. Bay Colony. Elizabeth, c.1641-c.1611, married Samuel 1669.
2 different wives for Samuel, maybe?

Subject: [CANFIELD] CAMFIELD/CANFIELD - MERWIN
This is taken from The New England Historical and Genealogical
Register,
Volume 150, October 1996 / Whole Number 600.
"The English Ancestry of the Merwin and Tinker Families of New England,
Part
I: Miles Merwin of Windsor and Milford, Conn.," by Douglas Richardson
(149 [1995]: 295-311).
149: p. 307, correct to read Miles(1) Merwin's oldest child, Elizabeth
MERWIN,
Married Samuel CAMFIELD, son of Matthew and Sarah (Treat) Camfield.
We apologize for transposing Matthew into Samuel, a typographical
error that
was not caught by proofreaders. The mistake was called to our
attention by several people.
The author used the spelling Canfield, apparently in the belief,
shared by the editor, that the spellings Camfield and Canfield were
interchangeable. Thomas W. Camfield of Port Townsend, Washington, who has
in progress a Camfield genealogy, sent copies of signatures showing that
Matthew used the Camfield spelling, which was perpetuated by his son Samuel
who married Elizabeth Merwin. The name is seen in subsequent records in
several different spellings, including Canfield.
The error appears also in the offprints of Mr. Richardson's
article
which are being sold by the Miles Merwin Family (1623-1697) Association,
Inc.
Thought you all would be interested in this.
