Subject: [CRV] Howe/Deming Bible
There is a Bible currently listed on ebay belonging to Darius Howe
and
Hannah Deming
_eBay: 1809 BIBLE; HOWE FAMILY; pub. BY MATHEW CAREY, PHILA. (item

Item)
This Bible was published by Mathew Carey of No. 122 Market Street,
Philadelphia in 1809. It is bound in leather and has gold embossing.
The words "Holy
Bible" are embossed along the spine in gold against a maroon background
with
a Greek key border. The first entry is the marriage of Darius Howe (b.
1792) and Hannah Deming (b. 1793) on February 3rd, 1820. A sheet was
added to
the bottom of the "Marriages" page to record the deaths of other members
of the
Howe Family. The "Births" include Caroline in 1822, Mary Elisabeth in
1825, Julia in 1828, and Mariah in 1834. "Deaths" include Darius in
1868,
Hannah in 1883, Maria in 1880, and Mary Elisabeth in 1905.
This beautiful and poignant Bible is in good condition with some
scratching
and minimal wear to the cover and interior. Several pages have been
creased
and the frontis is very fragile. I've looked through it carefully and can
find no indication of a location for the Howe family (no dated keepsakes
and
such). Wouldn't it be fabulous if somebody out there recognized some of
these
family names and it was returned to its rightful place?
This Bible was another housewarming gift (bought at auction, I
understand)
and has never been appraised. We've felt a genuine responsibility to
those
whose names are held in its family pages and we've tried to take very good
care
of it. I've always displayed it at Christmas with red velvet ribbon
marking appropriate passages. Otherwise, it was dusted regularly and
handled very
little. I'd like to see it go to somebody who will feel equally
responsible
and humbled to possess this piece of American history.
I want to emphasize that it is QUITE OLD and fragile. I am NOT an
expert
on old or rare books! In order to err on the side of caution, I am
selling it
AS IS. I have inspected it in detail and have described it to the best
of
my ability but please be realistic in your expectations.
