Here I am again - I forgot to answer your question. I don't know if the kids
were named after uncles as I dont have any previous lineage on this line.
Orsemus and Hannah Duncan Canfield migrated to Iowa about 1862 or so.
Previous to that they lived in Michigan (1839 to 1862). Before that in 1832
Orsemus went to Indiana, his obit said. In Michigan census for the above
period of time I found two young Canfields staying with the Taylor's and
another family. Probably being farm hands. The Canfield young men there did
not have names remotely like Orsemus or Amos, but I will look them up again
for our next conversation. So?? By the way, Alice (Orsamus' daughter and my
great-grandmother) named her children: Lulu(?), William, Jennie, Charles
Hiram, Hannah, Dorothy (Dot), and Ethyl. Any of those names sound familiar.
Charles Hiram is my grandfather and I know that he was named after Alice's
brothers Hiram and Charles. Hope this adds some light to the situation.

I've been following the information you have posted on Orsamus Canfield
and MAY be able
to help. I've been very busy the last week or two and will not have time
for more
than a brief note now. I suspect that the father of your Orsamus Canfield
is
Orsamus SR. Canfield, who was the son of Silas Canfield. Silas Canfield
traces back
to Matthew Canfield of England.
I do not have complete information on Silas but have some names and some
dates
for his kids. Information passed down in my family lists a Ors(e)mus as a
son of Silas.
However the time is one generation to early, so I suspect your Orsamus is
Orsamus
Jr. I have no dates or spouse info for Orsemus SR. There is a Silas Sr
and Silas Jr so
there is a SR, JR naming pattern in the family. Also I noted the names of
a couple of
kids of your Orsamus had the same names as other kids of Silas SR. Were
they named
after their uncles?
Also the time period and location are correct. Several members of Silas
SR's
family were in the Chemung, Scheyular, Steuben county area of NY
beginning about 1800. They
migrated in from VT. At least one or two of silas Sr's kids moved to
Indiana in 1819. Dearborn
County.
More next week when I have additional time.
