Hi Juanita!
There is a connection to my line.
Gregory Camfield/Canfield d. c.1635 England + Joan Merrill had 3 sons:
#1: Matthew (1604 England - 1673 New Jersey) is my 8th-gr-grandfather
#2: Thomas (1623 England - 1698 Connecticut) Matthew's brother, married
Phebe/Phoebe Crane. Their son, also Thomas b.1654, md Rebecca Adkinson,
although I had the marriage year as 1677
#3: Nathaniel nothing known about him at all.
So that makes you and I about 10th cousins or thereabouts.
Ron

Hello everyone
I can't remember the last time I saw a posting on this list.
Does anyone have anything at all to say about their Canfield family ties?
To (hopefully!) start off a discussion, I'll tell you about my maternal
grandfather, Joseph Edgar "Joe" Canfield.
Joe was the son of John CANFIELD & Lois Rebecca MOLER; grandson of Elijah E.
CANFIELD & Sarah Maria GRIGGS; gr-grandson of Hezekiah Graham CANFIELD &
Mary "Polly" ROWLEY, etc etc
Joe was born Mar 9 1891 in Taylorville, Christian Co., IL., the first and
only child of John & Lois.
His father left the family when Joe was just a new-born infant; he never
knew his father or his father's family.
Joe's mother remarried in Nov 1891; his father re-married in Sep 1894.
When Joe was 12, his mother died [Jul 11 1903, Pope Twp, Lafayette Co, IL]
After this, Joe was raised by his maternal MOLER grandparents for a few
years.
By 1910, Joe was a coal miner living in Williamson Co. On Aug 29 of that
year, he married Hattie May PAGE in Marion, Williamson Co. IL. Hattie was
born Jun 9 1887 in Franklin Co, IL, daughter of Charles Brockman PAGE and
Mary Ann MCCASLAND. Like Joe, Hattie had been orphaned and left pretty much
on her own from about the age of 10 on with little or no contact with her
real family. (My own note here: this orphan business sure made it difficult
to track down Joe & Hattie's families!!! But that is another story.)
From all accounts, Joe's educational history was pretty much
non-existent.
Family legend is that Hattie taught him to read and write after they
married.
When they married, Hattie already had one infant daughter, 6-month old Cleo,
by a fly-by-night sweet-talker. Joe accepted Cleo as his own, gave her the
Canfield name, and raised her as his own daughter. In fact, Cleo was in her
late teens before she found out that Joe wasn't her biological father.
Joe & Hattie had 10 more children together. Family joke was that every time
Joe hung his pants up Hattie got pregnant. Sadly, 5 of those 10 children
died in infancy or early childhood.
The life of the coal miner was difficult, especially as the Depression
approached. The family moved from mining-town to mining-town, usually living
in company-run housing and, as the song says, "owed my soul to the company
store". Most of this was in southern IL, but there was at least one brief
stay near Ft Wayne IN, where Joe registered for the draft in 1917.
Life was tough economically, and Joe was known to occasionally swipe corn
from area farmers' fields to help feed his family. He also brewed and sold
bathtub gin. And he was a Pentacostal lay preacher. (Quite a combination,
eh?)
According to his daughter, my aunt Betty Canfield Rose, at some point
earlier in his life, Joe had been shot in the stomach, and the bullet was
left in by the doctor. He was exempted from the draft on that basis. The
bullet eventually migrated to below the skin at his lower back and was then
removed. That was sometime in the 1930's. Betty did not know the details of
when, where, or why he had been shot, other than it was before WW1.
In the late 20's, sometime between 1927 & 1930, the family moved to St.
Louis. Cleo, the oldest, got a job as a chorus dancer in a local burlesque
theater, and went on to become moderately famous as a dancer and comedienne,
traveling around the country. Her income helped to support her family back
home, as Joe found it difficult to keep a job during the Depression,
Around 1940, give or take a year, with the help of Cleo, Joe bought a small
farm near St. James, Phelps Co., MO. The family remained in St. James until
Joe's death, from a heart attack, on Jan 8, 1948. He collapsed while driving
along old Rt 66 near Rolla, and died almost instantaneously. He was found
dead in his car which had run off the road. He was buried in Memorial Park
Cemetery in St. Louis
Shortly thereafter, Hattie sold the farm and moved the family back to St.
Louis. She died Nov 5 1960, and was buried next to Joe.
Joe was a seriously flawed man, and I won't go into the details which are
irrelevant. But he was a hard working man that did everything he could to
keep his family fed, clothed and under a roof during a time when it was very
difficult to do so.
I have photos available of Joe & Hattie's wedding, and family snapshots from
the 1940's, If anyone would like copies of these for their Canfield album
let me know and I will send them privately, since attachments aren't allowed
on this mailing list.
If anyone would like to contribute a story to the list, feel free to do so!
Let's liven things up!
Thanks!
Ron Johnson

I am glad to do my part as well telling you about my Canfields.
Many years ago, in the town of Candor, NY my husbands great grandfather
James H. Jennings Sr. was married to a Mary Augusta Wells. She died
about 1903/05. They had a number of children, Eva, Lucille, ( also known
as aunt Bea by family members and grandma by my husband and his brother's
and sister.) and James H. Jr., there was another sister but for the life
of me I can't remember her name. After Mary died he married Eleanor
Canfield Banfield the sister of Dr. Amos Canfield from VanEtten/NYC.
His father was Enos Canfield and his mother was a Wald I believe.
Eleanor didn't like being called grandma so the kids called her Da Da.
After James H. Jennings died about 1942 Da Da, moved over to her
brother's place across the street to help him. He was a widower by that
time and in ill health. After he died and I forget the year, she married
a Mr. Murray and moved to Fl. I believe.
Now about Dr. Canfield: He married Rosa Murphy also from VanEtten. She
was a private secretary to old John D. Rockefeller. He helped her invest
her money and she became quite well off. Amos as I said, was a doctor
and apparently they met while in NYC and married and since they were both
from VanEtten they may have met there when he was back there visiting
family and friends, I don't know for sure. After they married, she
didn't want him to be a doctor any more and paid him not to be as the
story goes. They wintered on Riverside Drive in NYC and came to our
little town in Candor during the summer months. He built what was known
when I was a child "Canfield Gardens", it is now owned by Professor and
Mrs. Frank Musgrave and Fred, their loveable bassett hound. ( I must say
if you want to enjoy a taste of county and be spoiled by great food, go
on line and type in "Edge of Thyme" Candor, NY.
Amos and Rosa also toured the county in their private RR Car and by
chauffeured limousine. They were good friends with many people including
Walter Huston the actor father of John Huston, and his wife Bayone
Whipple his second wife.
Bayone was a Candor girl who had changed her name from Rose to Whipple
and went to the big city of LA. to live and work. But that is a whole
other story and this is the Canfield page.
The Canfields also have a connection to the Hills, which is my side of
the family I forget how but there is definitely one connection that I
know of and perhaps more.
Sorry I don't have a lot of dates to share but do know that this was
about 1905 when the Jennings and the Canfields married.
Do any of you Canfields have a connection to Amos and Rosa?
Also there is a connection to another famous Canfield who lived in
Hollywood. Wish I could remember the name but she was killed in an auto
accident in the 1920's while driving home from a party I believe. She
was married to a silent movie film start and he died and she remarried.
If anyone can help me fill in the dates I would be most appreciative.
Joan Beebe Meddaugh ( with a Canfield on both ends)

Hi there! I have very little info on my husband's Canfields but I'll give
you what I have in hopes someone out there can help fill in the blanks. I
show an Aimee Canfield (1892-1968) who died in Oklahoma. She married Bert
Eugene "Sparks" Barnhill who also died in Oklahoma ten years later. I have
no
other information for Aimee but do show that Bert's mother was also a
Canfield,
Annie who was born in Missouri. I show that her father was perhaps a
Lester
Canfield and have no dates or further information for either. Please let
me
know if you can fill in any of my blanks. Thanks! Kelly

Hi Nancy
Actually, our lines do fit, just much further back
My Hezekiah Graham Canfield (fought in war 1812) (1781-1863) was the son of
Silas Canfield (fought in the Revolution) (1741-??) & Judith Graham
Silas Canfield was the son of Timothy Canfield (1700-??) & Keziah Ferris
(c.1706-c.1754)
Timothy Canfield was the son of Ebenezer Canfield (1670-??) & Mary Henery
Ebenezer Canfield was the son of Samuel Canfield & Elizabeth Willoughby, and
the older brother of your Jedediah
So that makes you & I, what, 7th or 8th cousins or something like that?
Do have one question/comment for you:
Your Jedediah Jr you have married to Rose Wescott; my information was that
her name was Rose Ketchum. My source for this was "Colonial Families in the

Glad to see some activity here again. I would like to ask if anyone has
information on Canfield's in the Albany NY area. According to a family
bible, AMELIA Canfield was born 26 Aug 1806 in "Albany". (Might be one
of the surrounding counties). Nothing is known of her parents. She
moved to NYC in 1816 and married Nathaniel Gilson there in 1825. Any
clues would be greatly appreciated.
Elaine
