Hello cousin! (4th cousin, actually, if Hezekiah is our common
ggg-grandfather.)
I've been in touch with Elinor also.
Elijah & Emeline "Bagley"?
I know there were several Elijah's in various generations.
My ancestor, Elija[h] E., son of Hezekiah was born c.1817 in NY, and had 3
wives that I know of: Eveline Workman, Sarah Maria Griggs, and Mrs Nancy
Greer/Grear maiden name uncertain. The time frame you give below for the
land sale, 1841-1842, fits the period he was married to Eveline & living in
Ripley Co, IN. The were married Nov 1837 in Ripley Co. IN. Appeared together
in the 1840 census of Ripley Co, and the June 1 1850 census of Ripley Co
[enumerated in Aug]. Then in Ripley Co in Sep 1850 he married Sarah Griggs.
Dont know yet what happened to Eveline that summer, probably died. My
gr-grandfather John was born to Elija & Sarah in abt 1861, supposedly in
Clay Co, IL. I lose track of the family till 1880, then they are in
Montgomery Co, IL, where Elijah is married to Nancy, whom he married in Dec
1874 in Montgomery Co IL. Again, havent found out yet what happened to
Sarah, my gg-grandmother. For that matter, haven't found Elijah's death info
either.
I have found records of land sales by the Fed Gov to Elijah Canfield in
Ripley Co IN in Mar 1837 & Aug 1839. Haven't proven that is same as my
ancestor, but most likely since I cant find any other Elijah in the county
during this time frame.
You didn't mention where that land transaction took place. IN maybe?
Could Eveline Workman/Emeline Bagley be the same person? Perhaps she had
been married prior to her marriage to Elijah?
I wish I had more "family lore" to work with, but my gr-grandfather John
Canfield walked out on his wife shortly after my grandfather was born in
1891, so Grandpa never knew his father or anything of his father's family.
John was apparently a bit of a drifter, working as a laborer, no known land
deals or anything. Then Grandpa died young, at age 56, when my Mom was just
shy of her 21st birthday, long before I was even a gleam in anyone's eye.
(Just to make matters worse, my grandmother was an orphan. So I have really
really had to work at putting my entire maternal line together!)
And yes, we definitely need to keep in touch!

Ron: I am so glad to make contact with you. I think we have a lot
to
share.
You will be more pleased when I say that just a few weeks ago I made
contact
with an Elinor Jackson who is a direct descendant of Elija's
brother,
Minor
Canfield. Both were sons of Hezekiah Graham. I am forwarding your
message
to her to see if you two can share some information. She is quite
knowledgeable on Canfield line -- wonderful to talk to someone with this
amount of knowledge both on Genealogy and on the Canfield line.
Her ggg grandfather Hezekiah Graham Canfield and my ggg grandfather Ira
are
brothers. My Ira is quite illusive while her Hezekiah Graham is
well
documented. She has paper work to show that Hezekiah served in the War of
1812 and that his brother "Ira" served the last two months of it for him.
That is the first time I have connected him with Hezekiah and therefore,
Silas. Although I also have a copy of a letter from Ira to another
brother,
Thaddeus, in Yates Co., NY circa 1846.
By the way, on my last trip to Salt Lake, I found a couple of land
transactions circa 1841-2 where Elijah & Emeline Canfield were selling
land.
One was sold to a Walter Bagley which I understand is the brother to
Emeline
(Bagley) Canfield. Perhaps you already have these.
Another thing: Don't know if you know about this site, but I found a
website
on the Internet that has a story about our Silas Canfield and his
buddy,
Webster, who were soldiers with Col. Seth Warner's company stationed at
Ft.
George, NY, and they went outside the Fort to feed the horses.
Indians
came
upon them, robbed them and then kidnapped them. Took them up to
Canada
where they were sold to the British....well, the whole story is there for
you to see: Just go through your regular search engine and type in
"Silas
Canfield and Webster" and see the description of the site where
the story
is
located. It is quite wonderful and full of adventure. It is simply
amazing
that they lived through this! Take care -- and lets keep in touch.
