Ron: I just got back from a trip to Manchester, VT,
where I was trying to find more info on Silas (Sr.) & Judith. Verrrry
illusive people, still! In this pursuit I also went to the Pittsfield
National Archives center in MA where I studied the census film on Crown
Point, Essex Co., NY. You are right when you say that Silas and William and
Ebenezer are listed there -- I found them to be next door neighbors! Like
you, I do not know which Silas (Sr. or Jr.) this might be -- however I was
able to get my hands on film copies of the original vital statistics of
Silas & Judith's children. Silas Jr.'s birth date is listed as December
7th, 1778 -- He was the third child and first son -- and that date would
make him 22 years old in 1800. Old enough to be on his own....and that must
be considered, but here's another tidbit of information that makes it hard
to decide which one (Sr. or Jr.) is listed. Silas Sr. was stationed at
Crown Point as a Rev.War soldier in 1779. That is documented in the story
noted on the internet about his being kidnapped and held captive along with
an Isaac Webster outside Ft. George in 1779. (Just go to your search engine
and type in "silas canfield webster" and this story will pop up.) Anyway,
after looking at maps and the history of the area, Crown Point is just a hop
and a skip, so to speak, from Ft. George. So it could very well be that
after Silas & Judith moved from Manchester, they went "back" to Crown Point
to live because it was now a full-fledged town and his/their friends lived
there too. I understand that Crown Point made land available to settlers.
Either one of the Silas's could have returned as settlers.
A Silas Canfield is also in Crown Point in 1810, but gone after that.
Ebenezer and William have left Crown Point by 1810, but William is found in
1810 Ft. Ticonderoga which is a further down the road. I believe Silas Jr.
shows up in Indiana after that (abt. 1820 and near Hezekiah Graham his
uncle)and then moves on up to Michigan. (I have to study my info again, but
believe that's the way it goes.)
But you are right, both options need to be explored further. Sandy Childs
(desc. of Ira Canfield, son of Silas & Judith)

they are in this order, one after the other, about halfway down the page

it seems.

I think, but am not sure, this Silas is Silas Jr, the son of Silas Sr the
Rev. War
soldier & his wife Judith Graham.
Not sure of relationship of Ebenezer & William to Silas. Perhaps
cousins
or uncles? Silas Sr did not have any sons named Ebenezer or William that I
know of.
