There were indeed Canfields in Vermont, from the Matthew Canfield line.
Most of the ones I've run across were in Southern Vermont, mainly the
Manchester/Arlington area. But they did get further north.
The author Dorothy Canfield Fisher reportedly was among them.
Be aware also that the Canfield spelling shows up in my KENFIELD lines,
descending not from Matthew but from William KENTFIELD, an English
soldier who arrived in New York City in 1700.
More important for your purposes, some of your CANFIELDs may show up in
records under the KENFIELD or KENTFIELD spellings. I've seen all of
these spellings, and others, used interchangeably in Vermont records.
They can be hard to sort out.
Good luck.

Thanks for replying -- you are right. Your Canfields although they could
be an offshoot of my branch come from a much later time period. I'll keep
you in mind if I find more on the NY families. Good hunting! Sandy

He later moved to Texas in 1834 and settled near Mina(Bastrop) Where he meet

of sterling qualities. He soon joined the Mina Volunteers
and served in the Battle Of San Jacinto under Capt. Jessie Billingsly. He and
Jonathan Burleson were detailed to guard the baggage at Harrisburg during the
battle.
After the war he retuned to Bastrop to find his wife and her family had to
flee the country because of Mexican threats. He found her after sometime, and
his first son William Augustas Fisk. They returned to Bastrop where he was
elected a member of the Senate. He served as Mayor from Nov.1839-April 1840,
