Message Board Post:
I am looking for the descendants of Thomas Pierce Demaree born a slave of Samuel Demaree
in Henry County Kentucky in 1853, he lived with the family of Samuel's children
Samuel, Betsey, and John Milton. When Pierce was a teenager he was shot in the arm by the
KKK and it had to be removed. He had a son Jesse born in 1888, perhaps Kitt, another
Demaree slave and secondly he married Phoebe Rucker around 1901, married by John Milton
Demaree. Pierce, as he was known and his son Jesse, were living with his sister Sarah
Agnes Hawkins and her husband Bob in 1900 in Christiansburg, Shelby County, KY but they
later moved to Frankfort where they lived on East Third Street. He was a janitor, probably
at First Corenthians on Murray Street and also worked at the Captial. Pierce died in
1960.
Jesse was the father of Katherine Demaree Cane. I am writing a manuscript called the
History of the Low Dutch Slaves, and I would love to discover the date of Pierces date,
the location and where he is buried. Both the African American Demarees and the white
Demaree families remained in contact with one another during Pierce's life time.
So if anyone can help me, I would appreciate hearing from you. I would also like the
birth and death information for Jesse, his wife Catherine and their children. If children
Robert Demaree and Abbie Hill of Tuscon, AZ are still living I would like to email them. I
am more than happy to share what I have gathered with family members and will be happy to
credit your submissions if I can use them in this document.
