Betsy, I have a wonderful community quilt that has been passed down in my family from
1889. It lists 328 individuals, most of which lived in Stephenson County at the time. The
complete listing of the names has been posted on the Stephenson County genweb site. Both
my great grandparents (mm) are descendents of John Emerick and Mary Dunkle through their
two children. My great-grandmother is also an Austin-Southwick while my great-grandfather
was a Hassinger.
I don't know the history of the quilt other than it was made is 1889 by the Ladies
Union Aid Society. I have a great many relatives listed on the quilt and along with their
names is their city of residence at the time. Unfortunately only two Candy's appear on
the quilt: John and Levi, both listed as living in Rock Grove. I don't know where
Samuel moved onto, but nearly all of the rest of my relation from Stephenson County moved
on to Nebraska, settling in Lancaster, Saline, & Bennett counties. My mother and my
daughter and I have begun making annual trips to Nebraska to track family history and I
will see if I can locate Samuel there.
Thanks.
