Welcome to the list... please feel free to post your line. The line I am
researching is that of Jason Candee, son of Amos Candee and Lydia Platt
(this line is available in the FAMILY GENEALOGIES section of
http://thegenealogypages.org under the Van Cott family file). This is one of
the lines descended form Zaccheus Candee.
The following was taken from "The Candee Genealogy" by Charles Candee
Baldwin, 1882:
Zaccheus Cande settled in New Haven, Connecticut. His name is spelled in the
early records Kembee, Kambee, Canbee, Candee, but generally Cande. When
married, he is called Cambee; his wife, Bristow. His daughter Rebecca is
daughter of Kembee; Zaccheus is son of Candee; Abigail, daughter of Cande.
His children are all generally called Cande. His grandson Samuel appears in
New Haven Probate Records as Candy- so far as I know, a solitary instance.
In the Town Records of Stratford, Vol 1, page 69, is a deed from Thomas
Sherwood to John Burritt, witnessed by Zaccheus Canby or Conby. It is
perhaps impossible, at this date, to tell whether a or o was intended. The
other witness is Daniel Cun. The deed is dated May 17, 1675, and marked:
"Exactly recorded from ye originall."
On his tombstone, still extant in West Haven, he is called Zachariah: "Here
lies ye body of Mr. Zachariah Cande, died 1720, aged 80 years." By his side
lies his wife: "Here lies ye body of Mrs. Rebekah Cande, wife of Mr.
Zachariah Cande, died Dept ye 22nd, 1739, aged 91 years." This would make
hom born about 1640. He first appears in New Haven, as marrying, December 5,
1670, Rebecca Bristow, daughter of Henry Bristow, or rather Bristol, of New
Haven. She was born February 4, 1650, and age overdated on her tombstone- a
circumstance not unusual.
Mr Orcutt (from her tombstone no doubt) says she died September 22, 1739,
aged 91. Zaccheus lived and kied in West Haven, probably at the southeast
corner of the Green, where, down to a late day, remained the dwelling of his
son Samuel. They had seven children. More... this book is available in the

Christine
