I have so little information on Mary (Canby) Hampton. The date of death was
given to me by another Canby researcher. I will contact her and see if I can
get more information.
Nice memorial on find-a-grave.- Thanks.

Thanks, Jean.
My source for Mary's death is In the Footsteps of Joseph Hampton and the
Pennsylvania Quakers, by Vernon Boyce Hampton, Doylestown, PA: Bucks County
Historical Society, 1940, p. 29. I haven't seen the year 1754, but I'd love
to know your source. Living to 97 years old back then wasn't impossible,
but highly improbable.
I own the above book. I don't know where VB Hampton got his information.
He was heavy on authoritative assertions but light on sources. The vast
majority of his information, however, has proved to be accurate by
independent confirmation. Mary's death year may be a project for me over
the July holidays. Unfortunately, being in Australia I can only ever find
information that's online or available to the genealogical friends and
colleagues with whom I have built relationships over the years. Sometimes
they can dig stuff up for me. Sometimes I just have to put it on my To Do
list for my next visit home to Hunterdon Co.
I own A Quaker Saga and also Minutes of Records of the Kingwood Monthly
Meeting of Friends, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, by James W. Moore, H.E.
Deats (publisher), Flemington, New Jersey, 1900. This is a source of much
information on the descendants who founded Quakertown in Hunterdon Co., New
Jersey. Quakertown is a sleepy little village now in Franklin Twp.,
Hunterdon Co., but Franklin was carved from neighboring Kingwood Twp. in
1845.
I'll have to look for the other book. Thanks for the heads up about it.
Have a look on
www.findagrave.com for more information on Joseph and Mary
Canby Hampton's descendants. I have put most of what I have collected on
there. There are no places for sources, but you can always write to me to
ask. I'm happy to share anything I've got. A good starting point is with
Mary Canby Hampton's memorial:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=49874680 . Follow her
line down through the three Benjamin Hamptons, and from there to William
Wharton Hampton, Anna Rebecca Hampton Burroughs, Anna Mariah 'Rita'
Burroughs Shoudt and Harry Kitchen Shoudt (my beloved grandfather) to stay
with my line.

Dear Mary Jo,
I am familiar with Mary Canby, the daughter of Thomas & Sarah, but have
little information on her. I have seen her date of death given as both 1754
& 1794. Most of the information on
Ancestry.com gives sources from "US
International Marriages" & Family Data Collections. While these are good
starting points, more information is needed to confirm these dates as
correct.
I have their date of marriage as 1722. My sources for this date is:
Early Settlers of Solebury Township, Bucks County, Pa., (The Bucks County
Historical Society, Doylestown, Pa. 1971). Appendix B.
A Quaker Saga by Jane W.T. Brey
Neither of these sources give much more information about Mary & Joseph.
A better source for you might be:
Hampton History: an account of the Pennsylvania Hamptons in America in the
line of John Hampton, Jr., of Wrightstown; with an appendix treating of some
other branches John Hampton Doan, 1911. This is a free e-book which you can
find on Google books.
Hopefully you will find some time to do some searching when you are off in
July. Please post your family information on the Canby list & maybe others
can help you.

Hi, guys.
I'm a member of this list, but it's usually very quiet.
I'm working and have two teenagers, so I can't spend a lot of time with my
reply
at the moment. I'll be off for two weeks in July, so I hope to be able to
respond then.
I'm descended from Thomas Canby 1667-1742 and Sarah Jervis Canby ?-1708
through
their daughter, Mary Canby 1697-1794, who married Joseph Hampton 1702-1767.
Regards,
Mary Jo
