Hi,
I too am researching Canavans, as my mother was a Canavan from Balina, County Mayo, West
Ireland.
As you will already have realised, there are so many of them.
In reading previous threads, I have seen Ruanes and Mangan mentioned, so for you, I think
the links are there, just work back from your own entry.
I have been to Ireland and met some of the Canavans whom my mum was related to.
Her grandfather was a Martin Canavan, labourer, borne 1831.
He married Mary Noone, washer woman, borne 1861. Their address was Workhouse Road.
Their first child was John, borne 1892
Martin 1898
Martin Joseph 1901
My maternal grandmother Margaret ?1905
Molly 1906
Michael 1908
Annie 1911
Norah 1910
Catherine 1912
While Mary Noone's later children were still young, she died.
After 1911, there doesnt appear to be Canavans in that area.
there are a number of relatives in the surrounding areas, but no longer in Balina.
The motherless family moved to Eniscrone.
I dont know when Martin or Mary died, so if anyone sees this and can fill in any gaps, or
may perhaps know of the relatives ive mentioned, Id be very pleased to hear from
you.Shortly before the death of my own mother, Margaret Canavan, born Feb 25th, 1919
(Pisces), we did manage to meet some of the Canavan descendants.
They were very hospitable and generous toward us, inspite of us being strangers, though
relatives. I hope others have the good fortune we did.
The Canavans have a link to a very famous family in America, but thats another storey.
Maureen
