I'm searching for information on the great-great-grandfather of my wife, Lillie
Canavan McCloud. Peter appears on the 1870 (at age 43) and the 1880 Federal Census (at
age 53) in Chicago. Both entries state Peter was born in Ireland, we are estimating a
birth year around 1827 based on the ages given above. His occupation in both census
entries is listed as "sailor".
Peter apparently was married twice - first to Catherine (maiden name unknown) who died
around 1869. The children from that union are believed to be as follows (ages given are
from the 1870 Census): John (18); Christopher (14); Mary (10); Ellen (10); and Thomas F.
(1). Ellen and Thomas remain in the household for the 1880 census.
Peter's second wife was Ellen (not sure of maiden name, perhaps O'Brien), they
were married in either January or June of 1870. They had three more children (ages are
from the 1880 census): Kate (7); William Henry (4) - Lillie's great-grandfather; and
Julia (1).
Peter purchased a family plot in Calvary Cemetery on 4/5/1870. Catherine's remains
(along with 7 others) were moved into the plot the next day from the "Old
Cemetery". His second wife Ellen was buried there on 10/3/1881. Peter himself was
buried on 5/22/1883.
We have yet to find any information on Peter prior to 1870. Any information would be most
appreciated. Thank you!
