Linda, just as an educated guess after thirty some years of working on
family histories, I would say that the Cannadays are more than likely
Scots who were in Northern Ireland and then came to this country and
not Irish. I know Kennedys are Irish and I could be wrong on the
Cannadays, but don't think so. There were Cannadays in Maryland and
Virginia in the 1600's. Joseph Cannaday came to James City County,
Va. in 1635 Clement Cannaday in 1642, John Cannaday in 1642, Edward in
1665, James 1665,William and wife Ann in 1671, and others who were
spelled with the Kennedy spelling.
One William Cannaday was in Someset Co. Maryland in 1666
Some of this family became Quakers and are recorded in Guilford Co.
N.C. in the New Garden MM. Some of us FEEL that the William of this
family that was born in 1730 may be the same William who is in
Franklin County, Va. in 1780. William Cannaday's daughter, who is my
ancestor, married an Underwood whose family had been Quakers (guess
part of them still are) but we just can't find documentation to lock
them together. Wish I could be more definite for you but I've been
working on this family for thirty years. Billie

BRL, So if mine gradually seemed to move from Kennedy spelling to
Canady,
are they more likely Scots-Irish (Ulsterite)?
Do you have any more suggestions for finding them in Viriginia?
Does anyone have one of those CD's like Marriages etc. in Virginia?
I have
one for some records for Delaware and Maryland I can do lookups
on.... Linda
