Not that much, when you come right down to it. Most of what I know came
from other people - like his birth date - 1770-1773. He married Mary
"Polly" Evans, born in 1780, both of them supposedly born in Virginia.
Another researcher said they were in South Carolina and were considered to
be native South Carolinians. I don't know exactly when they went to
Georgia, but I do know from the Putnam Co., GA web page that they were there
in 1813 as Caleb appears on the 1813 Tax List for Putnam Co. They were
still there in 1820 and I know they were in Campbell Co. by 1830 and gone by
1840 to Tallapoosa Co., Alabama. They were on the 1850 Tallapoosa Co.
census, living with a young couple by the name of Thornton. I don't exactly
know the connection, but I tend to think that the young woman was a
relative - maybe a granddaughter. I know the names of their children and
who they married. Their daughter, Druscilla, born 1815, was my great
grandmother. She married my great grandfather, William Gilbert, Jr. in 1837
in Campbell Co., GA. They also moved to Tallapoosa Co., AL but later - like
between 1840 and 1850. Druscilla died in 1851 and Caleb died in 1853, I
believe. Mary "Polly" (Evans) Canady died after 1860. I have not been able
to find where any of them are buried. Druscilla's husband, William
remarried to a Catherine Holt, but he died also about 1855/57, something
like that. I know that Druscilla was very musical, was a "class leader" in
singing (this from my Uncle Luther Gilbert - my mother's older brother).
That's probably where I inherited my musical abilities, as I play piano
professionally. Druscilla and William's youngest son, John F. Gilbert, born
in 1848 in Tallapoosa Co., was my grandfather - my mother's father. My
mother was born in 1890 in Leake Co., MS and I was not born until very late
in her life - she was 46 years old - in 1936. So there, you have a
thumbnail sketch of my descendancy from Caleb and Mary "Polly". Do YOU know
anything more? I would really love to find out who Caleb's parents were,
what country they came from originally - one reseacher said Ireland. What
they did for a living - farming, I imagine. Mary "Polly's parents were
William and Wilmoth Evans, and her grandparents were George and Hannah
Evans. George died in Clark Co. GA.
