Lin, when I get all of my messages answered I'll go through my Canady file
to see what I have that may help. I have no documentation that my William
Canaday of Franklin and Henry counties Virginia in the 1770s was a Quaker
but his daughter married an Underwood from N.C. That Underwood had been a
Quaker and came from generations of Quakers but was dismissed from the
church for either marrying out of the church or taking up arms. The church
records gave no reason for his dismissal.
Believe me no one was more shocked than I was to find Quakers in my maternal
grandmother's family for she is the one grandparent who helped me for years
on the family; however, since that religion was a few generations back
farther than she took me I doubt if she knew it.
It is believed that the Virginia and North Carolina Canadays came from the
Canadys in early Maryland, but it is believed also that the early family
members were not members of the Society of Friends. In one of my books I
speculated that my William was f rom the William Canady of early Maryland
and since then I have seen others put it on various genealogy webs for a
fact when I feel sure they took my speculation (even though I stated it was
an educated guess) and put in on the web. I might add if you find a
Primitive Baptist Church member in your family you can almost bet that
somewhere in their family lines they had a Quaker background. Even though
my grandmother knew nothing about the earlier religion, she was a Primitive
Baptist as were her parents, etc. The SOF had a split at one time and
those who did not return to the church joined the Primitive Baptist Church
which has many customs and beliefs that are the same or similar to the
Quakers. I hope, with this long message, I am not overstepping my time
limit on the Canaday rootsweb but this information may help others. Billie

Subject: [CANADY] John Canady, 1798, Rockingham, Nc.
Hi, Billie, Janna and others
Billie, thanks for your note about renting my central London studio.
It's been taken now, but who knows, it might be back on the market
by May! It's such a cool place to do genealogical research during the
summer -- I used to myself!
Now, about the "Rockingham Co NC Canadys". I am not at all sure
that all the Canadys who were ever in Rockingham Co NC were
from one family, especially if you have evidence that "the Rockingham
Co NC family" were Quakers. I see no evidence that my William
CANADY (1780s--1862) was a Quaker -- but then, he shows in his
only two census appearances that he was born in VIRGINIA, in
the 1780s -- and there were other CANADYs in what later became
Rockingham Co NC who were there by 1770. I'd expect that someone
born into their family in the 1780s would show a birthplace of
NORTH CAROLINA, wouldn't you? I think I recall (hazy memory,
so beware, readers!) that these early Canadys were related to a
Guilford Co NC Canady family, and Greensboro was originally
a Quaker settlement, wasn't it?
Now, Janna and I have corresponded off and on for ages, because
her research turns up so many of the same names as mine! In her
message recently posted here (see below), she connects a John
CANADY born ca 1798 to MY Gibson ancestor, Thomas GIBSON,
because their children married each other.
We can't find proof that this John CANADY (born ca 1798 in Rockingham
Co NC) was a brother of my William CANADY (born 1780s in Virginia),
but both these men certainly do link up over and over again to a couple
named Ransom BOSWELL & Elizabeth MOSS. And, curiously, this
birthplace pattern is almost identical to that of the GIBSONs Janna and
I are trying to pin down. They too seem to have been somewhere in
Virginia, then to have arrived in Rockingham Co NC ca 1797, then to
have moved over to Caswell Co NC.
Here is how all these CANADYs and GIBSONs connect through
the BOSWELLS (I've used an asterisk * to help all of you find
the CANADYs quickly):
1 BOSWELL Ransom Jr 1766-1835 m 1790 MOSS Elizabeth 1772-1853
He came from Mecklenburg Co VA, she came from Granville Co NC,
and by 1803 they lived in Caswell Co NC, where Ransom was
co-owner of a grist mill with his brother THOMAS Boswell, his
half-brother WILLIAM Boswell and his half-brother Joseph Boswell,
and perhaps others; they bought the mill from Joseph Benton.
Ransom & Elizabeth had these 9 kids:
2 BOSWELL Howel (Elizabeth's father was a Howel Moss)
2 BOSWELL James
2 BOSWELL Parabo ('Parabo' is a great finding aid, right? Can't find a
thing!)
2 BOSWELL MARGARET (my ancestress) m GIBSON Thomas
m 28 Dec 1819 Caswell Co NC; bondsman was Richard SMITH,
leading us to suspect that the Sophia GIBSON who married
Richard SMITH was an elder sister of Thomas Gibson --
but who were their parents?
Thomas GIBSON is named in an incident in the churchbook of
the Bethesda Presbyterian Church, in which Lickfork [Primitive
Baptist] Church is mentioned; not much sign of Quaker links
there.
3 GIBSON Margaret m 1865 Caswell Co NC to CANADY* Antiochus L.
son of John CANADY* & Elizabeth BOSWELL (see below); he was
undoubtedly named for Elizabeth's brother Antiochus BOSWELL.
3 GIBSON Iverson B. m 1841 Caswell Co NC to COBB Frances (my line)
daughter of Jesse COBB & Mary A. BOSWELL (see below)
2 BOSWELL MARY A. (my ancestress) m COBB Jesse
m 5 Dec 1816 Caswell Co NC;
Jesse seems to have abandoned his family in the late 1820s;
Mary A. attended Bethesda Presbyterian Church.
Their 4 children:
3 COBB Elizabeth m COBB Jesse E.
3 COBB Martha m COBB Neptha
3 COBB Frances m GIBSON Iverson B., her cousin (see above) (my li
ne)
3 COBB Livingston G. c1826-1863 m CANADY* Sarah Jane (my
line)
Livingston was born in Caswell Co NC & died at
Gettysburg.
They were married 11 Sept 1846 in Rockingham Co NC;
Sarah Jane CANADY* was born in April 1830 in Ruffin
Rockingham
Co NC & died after 1902. She was a daughter of
William
CANADY*
(1780s-1862) & Elizabeth ___. This William
CANADY* was
born somewhere in Virginia, resided in the extreme
eastern
part of Rockingham Co NC (his land adjoined the
Caswell
Co
NC boundary line) by 1830 and died in Rockingham Co
NC.
His wife was born ca 1791 in NC & died probably in the
1870s
probably in Rockingham Co NC. Who were HER parents?
Their five children:
4 COBB Mary Elizabeth (unmarried at age 52)
4 COBB Amanda E. m SMITH William R.
4 COBB George N. m SARTIN Rebecca
4 COBB John William m BERRY Mary (see below)
4 COBB Eugenia m SMITH Richard 1856-1936
2 BOSWELL FRANCES (my ancestress) m 1826 BERRY Elisha
3 BERRY Elizabeth Moss m 1853 SOYARS John C.
(John C. m 2ndly Mary J. Armfield, whose
mother was Louisa BENTON;
could she have been related to the Joseph
BENTON whose grist mill the BOSWELLS had
bought in 1803, above?)
4 SOYARS Mary Berry m 1893 COBB John William (see above)
2 BOSWELL Eliza m CORNWELL Samuel; no kids
2 BOSWELL ELIZABETH m CANADY* John
3 CANADY* Antiochus L. m GIBSON Margaret (see above)
3 CANADY* WILLIAM
3 CANADY* Eliza A. m 1861 PASCHALL
3 CANADY* John R.
2 BOSWELL Antiochus E. m twice but no kids named in his will
So, as you can see, not only John CANADY* and his son Antiochus L.
CANADY* married into my BOSWELL family, but also members of my
William CANADY* family did.
Did anybody see any link to anybody else? There MUST be a way to
figure out who the parents of John & William CANADY were and
who the parents of Thomas & Sophia GIBSON were. All help is
appreciated!
Cheers!
Lin
