So, are people's Canady ancestors more Scottish or Irish?
I've been poking around lately in Virginia records, because I can find some
records in some counties with both Kennedy and Knott -- I know that the
couple is Robert Kennedy and Elizabeth Knott from a marriage record of a
child. However, in all the Kentucky documents for the marriage (they had to
put up bonds plus the groom was underage and had a note from his mother, who
must have been illiterate -- the name is spelled both Cannady and Kennedy --
in the same notes! Anyway, I kind of got the impression that these folks
might be Scottish or Scots-Irish in Viriginia. But so far, doesn't look
good for finding a name like Robert Kennedy. And the son is John -- but
once he moved to Iowa, almost always appeared as Canady (and probate from
his father-in-law also names Mr. and Mrs. John Canady. Linda
Hello again! Thanks for writing.
My search includes the Canadys of southeast Georgia. The earliest ancestor
that I know of is Thomas (1802-1884) who married Sarah Jane Delegal
(1810-1906). They had five (?) children, including Henry (1837-1897) who
married Frances (or Fannie) Sheffield, daughter of William Sheffield and
Virginia Iler Sheffield.
Any help is well appreciated.

Hi Pam, I have all those variants, plus Kinaday. I am especially looking
for a Robert Kennedy and Elizabeth Knott, who show up in Nicholas County,
Kentucky, by 1810, but I have no idea where they came from (maybe
Virginia?). Their offspring tended to use Canady more consistently, one of
them all the time once he moved to Iowa. Any chance they could be from West
Virginia? Linda

Dear Pam'
I am still very much at a lose as to how to use the Internet to get
information. I truly think I am looking down a blind ally looking for
the information I want. The area that I am looking into is Virginia. I
wish I could talk with a Canady in that State that is interested in
research.
Is there access to actual records on the NET? I probably would do
better actually speaking one on one, but again I don't know how to do
that either. Help!
Thanks for listening
Pat

They had 3 children:

Sally Cannedy/Kennedy born 1777 in Darlington South Carolina
My GGGrandparents were James Cannedy and Eliza Grizzle Cannedy.

All has been quiet, so I thought I would
try to get some activity going.
First my questions:
Is the surname CANADY, a variant of another
surname? What regions are you searching?
I am researching Kennedy in WV
and find my ancestor listed as Canada, Canady
and Keneda.
Now for the list count:
On Nov 16. 1999, our list was at
19 mail mode subscribers and 6 digest subscribers.
We are now at
24 subscribers to CANADY-L and 7 subscribers to CANADY-D,
so we have grown just a little.
Be sure to also use the Genconnect Boards. You can find
links to the boards at:

Thanks,
