Hi fellow Canaday researchers!!
Since Pam Honaker, our list administrator has requested us to sign in, I
will again tell you a little about the Canaday family we are
researching. Meredith or Meriday Canaday was born on the Rappahannock
River in Essex County, VA.in 1753. This information comes from his
Revolutionary War papers. In it, he goes to Culpeper County,VA,to visit
a brother. We now believe his brothers were Wharton, Thomas, and
Leeroy. All three of these brothers left a will (Madison County, VA) In
the will of Thomas, it says that his property is to be divided
among..."my brothers, sisters, and my mother and their heirs." It
appears from this that his mother was still living in 1809. I have no
more information on who the parents were, other than this reference.
In 1789, Meredith was married to Sarah/Sally Smoot. In 1795, they go to
Kentucky. The same year, Sarah's parents also leave for Kentucky so it
is possible/probable they went together. Meredith is found in Fleming
County, KY on the 1800 tax list, as are the Smoots. We know that Sarah
and Meredith had at least two sons--Hezekiah and Zanthus, both born
around 1800-1802. The family then moves to Scioto County (Brush Creek
Twp), OH, about 1815. As far as we can tell, Meredith lives until about
1838--unconfirmed death date of Aug. 27, 1838. In a Smoot book, it
indicates that Sarah then goes to Christian County, KY and is living
next to her brother, John Smoot in the 1850 census. Yes, there is a
Sarah living there, but my research is not clear on whether this is the
same Sarah. As for their two sons, Hezekiah married Elizabeth White and
they had 7 children. He died in 1865. His brother Zanthus (Xanthus),
married Sela Scott. Seven children were shown on the 1850 census. This
family eventually goes to Hardin Co. Iowa where Sela dies in 1863.
Zanthus may have gone to Missouri after her death.
I hope this information helps someone in their Canaday quest. My
information is rather sketchy in the early days!! I still hope to find
out more about who the parents of Meredith were--my "stonewall".
