Hi, everybody, I am new to this list, and here is my connection to the
Canady surname.
My great, great grandfather was a Caleb Canady, born in 1770 in Virginia
supposedly, and married my gg grandmother, Mary "Polly" Evans. I have not
been able to get back any further than Caleb. I have no idea who his
parents were or where they came from originally. The first record I have of
Caleb is the 1813 Putnam Co., GA Tax List. He might have been in Jackson
Co., GA before that. He is then found on the 1810 Putnam Co. census, then
in 1830, he and Mary "Polly" were in Campbell Co., GA. From there, they
moved on over into Tallapoosa Co., AL where they both died - Caleb in about
1851 and Mary, after 1860. I also have no idea what Caleb did for a living,
but I assume he was a farmer. Their daughter, Drusilla Canady, was my great
grandmother, born in 1815 in Georgia. She married William Gilbert, Jr.,
also born in GA in 1815, the son of William Gilbert, Sr. and Tamar
Strickland. William, Jr. was a shoemaker, and Drusilla apparently was very
talented at singing. My Uncle Luther Gilbert said that she was a "class
leader" in singing, so I guess that's probably where I got my talent.
Anybody ever hear of these Canady's? I've also seen their name spelled
"Canada".
Thanks for any info you can give me.
