Pam, I have been working on the Cannaday family for over 30 years,
believe it or not, and am still stuck on William Cannaday and his wife
Nancy. The name is found as many different ways as there were clerks
to write it, but William himself spelled it Canaday. I have also seen
it with two and three NNs, but it is often found as Canada and
Kenneday or Kennedy. The trick is to check the children for
comparisons.
William received a land grand in 1779 of 108 acres from Thomas
Jefferson on Runnetbag Creek in today's Franklin County where some of
my cousins still own the land. In 1782 he received another grant of
551 acres on the same creek. William has a death r record in Franklin
County, Virginia and someone told me that he has a death record in
Patrick Co. (which was at one time part of Franklin/Floyd area) of
1801. In November of 1801, In Franklin Co. VA, William's son, William
Jr. bought his siblings' shares of his father's estate. Those
siblings agreed and were named as follows: James Canaday and Betty his
wife; John Radford and his wife Sarah; Samuel Underwood and Misniah
his wife; John Canaday and Nancy his wife; James Allen and Nancy
Allen, his wife. William's widow was mentioned but not named,
however, I have her documented as Nancy but with no recorded maiden
name.
A very good Cannaday researcher wrote me that he believes William was
from Maryland where he was born ca. 1730. I have not been able to
document that that William is the same as the William of Franklin Co.
I do know that the Underwoods were Quakers at one time and in Guilford
Co. N.C. there are records in the Quaker College of Cannadays being
philanthropists, but again I have not been able to connect to my
William Cannaday; however, Misniah Canaday who married Samuel
Underwood may have had Quaker background also Minsiah's unusual name
have had some descendants believing her to be Indian. Throughout the
generations of descendants her namesakes spelled their name as
Misniah, but when she signed her father's estate agreement she (one of
the few women named who could write) signed her name as "Misniera."
To make things even more confusing, I did look through the recent
published Cherokee tribes who moved westward and did find some
Underwoods and Cannadays, but I have documented the Underwoods back to
the immigrant in 1650, when he first came to Virginia and then left
for Maryland. Hope this helps someone with clues. So far, it hasn't
gotten me any farther along on William Cannady Sr. Hope this isn't
too long and that there will be clues enough to help someone get back
a bit farther than I have. Billie in Florida

Subject: [CANADAY] Message from List Admin
All has been quiet, so I thought I would
try to get some activity going.
First my questions:
Is the surname CANADAY, a variant of another
surname? What regions are you searching?
I am researching Kennedy in WV
and find my ancestor listed as Canada, Canady
and Keneda.
Now for the list count:
On Nov 16. 1999, our list was at
16 mail mode subscribers and 5 digest subscribers.
We are now at
18 subscribers to CANADAY-L and 7 subscribers to CANADAY-D,
so we have grown just a little.
Be sure to also use the Genconnect Boards. You can find
links to the boards at:

Thanks,
Pam Blankenship Honaker
