Hi Bill,
I am the descendant you refer to.
This is not to dispute that Canaday is one or the spellings.
The family spelled the name with and without the y at the end. Silas' and
Jennie's (Rachel Jane) Marriage Return in Preble County, Ohio, does not have the y.
Other published material does not have the y. In September (2007), I visited the
Fountain Park Cemetery in Winchester, Randolph County, Indiana to photograph the
gravestones. Silas' brothers, William Wesley and Franklin F. Canada (no y) are buried
there, as are Silas, Jennie, and Marvin D. Canaday (S&J's fifth child), and
Leander A. Canaday, another brother of Silas. Leander's stone is part of Silas'
group. I was quite surprised to see the y at the end, as I was raised to believe that
there was no y at the end, despite evidence to the contrary. Marvin D. was born and died
in 1894, and his stone would be the first in the the plot. There is also a Canaday
Monument as part of the plot. I can't help but wonder if the y is on all the stones
because of the early burial of Marvin and the Monument.
Silas' sons Chauncey M. and Robert Galen, spelled the name without the y.
Jonathan and Susannah Moore Canada's gravestone at Old Terrell Cemetery does not have
the y, nor does their son's, S.A. (Silas Agustus) Canada, gravestone.
Lucy
