I was in touch with GENE BARBER of Baker County Historical Society until his death. I will
quote his e-mail to me dated Wednesday December 18 2002-- concerning this CANADY INDIAN
MYTH.
"QUOTE"
"I must confess I had much to do with getting this "Bull-oney" started back
in the 1960's. I irresponsibly wrote up some oral History from members of the CANADY
CLAN about the Old CANADY Blockhouse and the rumors of Indian Blood in the Family's
background. I did NOT check the stories against documents. It was a dangerous thing to do
for unfortunately when something gets into print it usually becomes accepted regardless of
how incorrect it is. This story was taken to extremes-even to setting up grave markers
with the Indian information inscribed on them. Back in 1900 anthropologists from a number
of Southern Universities studied the Miccasukies and Seminoles of Florida and Oklahoma and
found two of Osceola's half sisters in Oklahoma(If I remember correctly this was in
the Florida Historical Society Quarterlies from the 1940's) If they would have found
any ties to Baker County Families, I'm sure it would have been reported. These people
were professionals with all means necess!
ary to trace down Osceola's relations-and they were a hundred years closer to the
events than we are. It all boils down to an elaborate and transparent false lie. I cannot
dig deeply enough into my vocabulary to find words to adequately express how happy I am
(finally) that someone of intelligence connected to the CANADYS is setting the record
straight about the Osceola Thing. My feelings is that the man was too great a person to be
belittled with a Bull story. Please place the correct and proper CANADY information on
the Baker Co site. You will perform a wonderful and laudable service to truth and to your
family. I've fought the fantasy of this story for about 25 years. Now I am ready to
help you correct the false information"
Signed: GENE BARBER
Mr BARBER was a well-known and well-respected Historian-writer-and art teacher-A native of
Macclenny-Baker County Florida and was a former Officer of the Baker County Historical
Society. He was well respected.
If you notice the date of death in the Court Records of Orange Co Florida SARAH
CANNADY-born c. 1800-wife of JOHN CANNADY-it was March 25-1879-The dates on the Indian
Headstones in Moniac Cemetery-Moniac Ga- list MISSOURI POWELL CANADAY sister of Chief
Osceola-1793-1840--In no documents of the CANNADY'S have I found SARAH's name as
MISSOURI.
Listed on the Grave of JOHN CANADAY in the Moniac Cemetery it reads:
JOHN MILLAGE CANADAY(Ossio Yahaltla) 1778-1860's. The JOHN CANADY who was the Father
of ELIZABETH CANADY RAULERSON according to records was born c. 1795-1796 in South
Carolina. The above documentation shows his migration pattern. At no time have I found
documentation with his name listed as JOHN MILLAGE CANADY. His son JOHN born in the
1820's went by the middle name-MILLEDGE and also had a wife named SARAH ANN. To my
knowledge the maiden name of SARAH CANNADY-Mother of ELIZABETH CANNADY RAULERSON has not
been documented
I have more documentation on this family if you are interested. It is also my Family.
Genealogy without documentation is mythology
