Didn't need to get your knickers in a wad. The incorrect spelling of the name
hasn't been used in over 150 years. John Milledge Canaday was in fact married to and
resided with Missouri Canaday. I'm sorry Gene has finally passed-on but he would tell
you he was a true bard and spinner of tales. He only repeated what he heard and was very
good at it. The mixing of facts to fit a nice scenerio and do less digging doesn't
negate the dna evidence my dad gave the Seminole nation nor it's positive results. It
also can be documented through DAR files as well as UDC (but only thru 1865). We are in
the Florida Pioneering Families as well. I really am not concerned about the Canadays as
much as the Raulerson bunch. There was a group that is still rebelling to this day. The
Canadays from John and Missouri never lived in or near Orange county (not to state a
branch didn'tas their were a lot of Johns in the family). The paper work is there in
the historical society in Macclenny !
at the old jail if you'd like to check it out. It's really very interesting.
The Barber family is really from Ware Co. Ga which was what my grandmother was. Her
brother was editor of the waycross journal herald. I guess that's were Gene got his
reporter's flair. He did enjoy a good yarn and could portray it with the wit of Carl
Hiaasen. He will be missed.
Good luck in your search and government documentation. The historical society could
really help you out in this but it's your choice, if not, so be it. My DAR and UDC
membership is in good standing, so it was proof enough for those picky people. Of course
it helps I have living proof (my dad) as well as the help of my alumni at UF as well as
the old ones from my grandfather's time as sheriff of macclenny. Of course, you might
want to purchase military records from the National Archives, they are not too expensive
as most of this documentation proves to be. John Milledge Raulerson, his grandson, went
to war with his father Westberry in the Fla 1st Regimental Reserves, Company G. I have
their service records from 1861-1865.
Oh yes, the Seminole Nation gives a small academic scholarship every year and direct
heritage has to be proven. It wasn't much but it did help both my children and
myself. You might be interested in that for your line if it is the same one.
Hope it helps. Good Luck!
