Jane, much of the resarch I have done points to at least one line of
Canadays who were Quakers from Ireland. The name was also spelled
Kennedey but pronounced the same. I don't really believe they were
Irish, but I believe they moved to Ireland to practice their religion as
did other Quaker lines which came to Pennsylvania in the late 1600's.
William Penn is probably one of the best known Quakers. However, I have
not found any Canadays in PA, but I did in Maryland which was also part
of the Nottingham Meeting.
My great (5) grandfather was Samuel Kennedy b in NC. He spelled his
name Kanady. I have never been able to trace him back to any of the
Canaday or Cannaday lines. However, I believe that there were some
branches who continued to practice the Quaker religion because they
married into staunchly Quaker families such as Beals, Bowater, Haworth,
Sumner, Cox, Mills, Barnard, Thornburg, Mendenhall, and Rice.
The Quaker religion started in England in the mid 1600's. I don't know
if the Quakers in Scotland were really Scots or English who moved to
Scotland, like the ones who moved to Ireland. You might want to take a
look at

Canaday Family by Bill Putnam.

Hello,
I am new to the list. I am attemping to do some reseaarch on my husbands family
(Canada/Canaday) and a connection on my side of the family (Canaday). First of all, is the
name "Canaday" from Ireland or some where else? Someone told me it was Scottish.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
