I descend from Samuel Underwood and Misniah Cannaday. She was the d/o
William Canaday (various spellings) and Nancy "Biddy" _______ who lived in
Franklin County, VA in the middle 1700's when he received land grants along
the Runnetbag Creek. His son William Jr. bought that land from his siblings
when Wm. Sr.'s estate was settled. William Sr. was a f airly large land
owner and one of the descendants recently sold the original homestead which
I have visited a number of times in the past few years. The house is
crumbling now that it is in new hands.
I, too, have heard the Indian legend but have not been able to document the
Cannaday family any farther than what I have given here; however, I have
documented the Underwood family to the immigrant, Thomas and wife Elizabeth,
in 1650 but no Indian found there either. We seem to think it was the
Cannaday family, but the Underwoods had been Quakers and there are a lot of
Cannaday Quakers in N.C. also. Write to me separately if you wish.

I wrote a book on about the Underwoods (including the Canaday) which just
went into the 5th edition but just sold the last one recently.Billie Redding

My husband is also related to Missenah Cannady and her husband Samuel
Underwood
thru their great grandson, Martin Underwood who married Mary E.
Foster. Their daughter Elizabeth married Thomas M. Bouldin and their son
John Albert Bouldin is my hubby's grandfather. One of hubby's sisters and a
cousin both have Indian features and coloring so I know it is somewhere in
the family line. I would be interested in hearing from anyone interested in
Samuel and Missenah.
