Hi Bill,
I wish I could verify who Walter's parents are. I have had contacts who claim that
Walter's parents are John Canaday and Margaret Thornburg. I have asked how they know
that but so far they haven't been able to prove it.
I too have a copy of the bio of William Canaday that appears in the 1915 History of
Northwest Missouri. There is also a short write up on William in the 1888 History of
Harrison and Mercer Counties of Missouri. (I have a copy of that book.)
An item that you may be intested in concerns Walter and Annie son Christopher who was born
in 1808 in Highland County, Ohio. In the 1915 write up it states that Christopher moved
out to Lowell Mills, Iowa and in 1845 stared over the Oregon Trail and nothing more was
ever heard of him. This is a story I have heard my father repeat more than once.
However, I don't think it is true. This past year I was sent a copy of an obituary of
Elizabeth Canaday who died on February 26, 1901 in Jefferson County, Iowa. Her husband
was Christopher Canaday born in Highland County, Ohio. It states that in 1842 she and her
husband moved to to Henry County, Iowa. Henry County is where Lowell (formerly Lowell
Mills) is located. Then in 1844 they moved to Jefferson County, Iowa which is about 50
miles Northwest of Lowell Mills. Another thing is that his parents, Walter and Ann
Canaday are buried in the same cemetery in Jefferson County, Iowa (The Moorman Cemetery)
as Christopher and Eliza!
beth.
Within the past two years I have been in contact with Duane Canaday from Oregon. He is a
descendant of Henry Canaday born in 1806 in Highland County, Ohio. Duane lists Henry as a
son of Walter and Annie Canaday. Both Duane and I had DNA samples tested and we are a
match. So he does descend from a common male Canaday as myself. Both of us are assuming
it is Walter.
I have a clear listing of my Canaday line from Walter down to myself because of the bio in
the 1915 publication. I just wish I could find proof of who preceded Walter.
If I ever come across actual proof I will definately contact you.
