It is presumed by me and others in our line, that William Canaday (Cannedy, Cannaday,
Canady, Kannaday) who is supposedly from Somerset MD and father to our Richard b1680 in
Carteret NC was married to Anne Fisher in Somerset MD in 1667. Below is a link for pages
683-685 of court detail. This makes Anne NOT William's wife, unless he married her
later after the recorded court date (besides the boss/employee relationship they had, I
don't think she liked him much). If you have something proving they were indeed
married, please post a link or attachment. I would rather be wrong than try and figure
out who he really married...
Also on the Maryland archive site are more pages of court detail. There has been chatter
that our William was "transported" to MD/VA in 1665, but there is court detail
for William Canneday (same as above) prior to 1665. Which means we have two Williams
almost the same age doing the same thing in the same county in the same state, but are two
different people?
I'm taking in quite a bit of history and have read that sometimes a person can be
recorded as being "transported" when in fact they weren't transported at
all, they are trading a favor with an acquaintance/family member. The higher the head
count in one family/group, the more acreage they got. It seems that the payoff was good
to do it that way, for everyone who might have come by themselves would not have got as
much acreage as they ended up getting for agreeing to be "transported" by a
friend/acquaintance.
Also, our line heads to Carteret NC rather quickly, as our Richard is born there in 1680.
In June of 1665, Charles II bestowed the Carolinas upon several of his bestest buddies,
not coincidently, one of them being Lord Carteret. So it stands to reason that our
Richard, born in 1680 in Carteret NC would have been the son of someone who was in the
"inner circle" of the English tobacco industry. And it appears William was.
And if you go through the aforementioned Maryland archived court pages, you will also find
that someone's wife got into bed with Cornelius Canneday. So, I'm thinking he
might have been the brother of William? Which leads me to the next question, who is ours
who begat Richard? William or Cornelius?
Spend some time in the Maryland archives. It is great fun!
