Hello everyone
I'm new to this list and am looking for someone who might know something about the
Wentworths in Nova Scotia.
In particular, I'm trying to trace the connection of Dr Charles Augustus Wentworth
(born circa 1796), resident in Halifax, and who emigrated to South Africa in 1820, to the
family of the Earl of Strafford, two of whom settled in Halifax in the mid 1600s. Dr
Charles married a Mary Wernich in Cape Town in 1821 and committed suicide at Uitenhage,
South Africa in 1834. He is reportedly a descendant of the Earl of Strafford and his
second wife, Miss Holles.
Anybody know anything about this please?

and his first wife, known as Mary Wernich (ref. Morse Jones). Dr Charles came to SA from
Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1820 on board the 'Duke of Marlborough' and spent some
years as a surgeon in Cape Town. He is reported to have married Mary (who may be Maria)
Wernich in 1821 in Cape Town. We next hear of him as surgeon to Lord Charles Somerset and
then district surgeon in Uitenhage where in 1831, he met and married Eliza Dalgairns, his
second wife.
Anybody know anything about the first Mrs Wentworth - Mary or Maria nee Wernich? She had
at least one daughter or perhaps two ( ref. Metelerkamp) ... Eliza and ?Kate. Eliza
married Robert Smith, a son of James Smith and Marianne Cherer (1820 Settlers).
I'm also interested in trying to establish the connection of Charles Wentworth to the
Earl of Strafford by his second wife, Miss Holles.
Any luck?
Regards ... Dave
