I am searching for information on James Canada who received BLM land
in Decatur, Iowa in 1856.
I believe he was closely related to Wesley Canada (c1824-1898)
living in Taney Co. Missouri spring 1856, but who also received BLM
land in Decatur Co. Iowa that summer. Wesley died in Decatur Co.
Iowa; the census records show he was born in KY.
My gr-gr-grandfather Jesse Canada (c1812-1856) took Wesley
Canada's cattle from Taney Co. (southwestern part of MO) to Sullivan
Co. MO (north-central part of the state) that spring. These cattle
were in Jesse's possession at the time of death, and made up the
bulk of appraisal value of Jesse's personal property. Wesley was
reimbursed by the estate. My guess, a "family agreement" to share
profits of cattle fattened over the summer -- but that's a guess.
I suspect the three are closely related -- perhaps brothers
even. Jesse's children say he was born in PA, IL or Iowa --
depending on the child and the year of the census. I wonder if the
kids just knew of kinfolk in Iowa and guessed? Any additional
information on the three will be greatly appreciated! Jesse's
probate and the guardianship records of his minor children are posted here:
