Subject: Proud of our History
Lou,
I have to agree with your comment in that Braveheart may not have given the
best perspective on the history of Scotland, but it did not make me ashamed
of my heritage. From a romantic view of history, I might prefer the
Campbell's role was different, but most of us don't get to rewrite history!
Good or bad, what the movie did do is draw a lot of attention to Scotland
and
its history. What it did for me, combined with research and other
exposure,
was to give me an appreciation for the complexity and richness of the
history
of Scotland. And it certainly gave me a more complete view of the
history
of
the United States. You will get lots of recommendations from the
list, I
am
sure, on where to go from here for information for your daughters.
However
you do it, I hope that you can infuse a pride in the ever-astounding and
awe-inspiring twists and turns, mysteries and revelations that make up the
history of Scotland and the Scottish people, wherever they now reside.
