Diarmid,
It is good to hear from you. And thank you for telling me of the rules
for the board.
I agree that a more appropriate place would/might have been the Clan
Journal. And I can't speak for everyone but I don't get the Journal. For
any number of reasons/excuses I haven't joined the Clan again. This list is
my daily source of information Campbell. And I read every post. One never
knows when something just might pertain to my line.
That was my only reason for defending the post. It reminded me of a
Campbell who followed in the steps of Gov. David Campbell of Virginia and
others who have served their state or country.
It is sad that we have to wait until a person is no longer alive to be
able to realize their significance historically. Another poster said Gov.
Campbell has Alzheimers. I will hope and pray that others have collected
information, written papers and the like so that when the time comes others
will be able to read about him then.
Judy in Virginia
And I miss reading your posts about Scotland and the Campbell's history in
Scotland. I hope someone asks a question soon so that I can read more. You
take care.

Judy,
I think that perhaps publishing the piece about Governor (or former)
Campbell on the List was considered 'political' because he is still alive
so
it fits less with genealogy or history, for which the list was
designed.
Personally I was grateful to have the news (although I am in Scotland and
don't belong to a political party in the US) because I know people in
Chareston SC.
I also had lunch with Ben Nighhorse Campbell when he was a (Dem)
legislator
in Denver. He was interested in his ancestry but because his father
was
Cheyenne it was not easy for me to help - and my knowledge is more about
Scotland rather than the US.
What to do with such current affairs information on Campbells is to send
them to the editor of the 'Clan Campbell Society (North America) quarterly
'Journal' - Patti Coller at PACOLSEA(a)aol.com since a section of that
magazine can happily publish material about people in politics of whatever
party, living Campbells or related people - then it is simply news of a
Campbell. We (I am Scottish contributing editor) have published material
about both these politicians before and had no complaints. It is like any
newspaper where you read about people of both parties.
However as I remember it this List does have a no politics and no religion
condition to keep peace on the List - but again, if it is historical or
genealogical politics or religion and not current issues, statement or
characters, then it is fair game on the List. Not much use discussing
'Campbellites' in 19th century Virginia or W VA without mentioning their
protestant religion, for example.
Please don't feel badly that you didn't know and thanks for the
information.
All the best,
Diarmid Campbell in Argyll in Scotland (one of the initiators of the
List).
