NOTE TO ALL - Please Read
One of the hottest emerging topics in genealogical research is DNA testing.
Numerous other clans and surname projects are underway. These topics attempt
to break through genealogical brick walls by sampling Campbell DNA (via a
cheek scraping) and then calculating the likelihood that two or more
Campbells are related.
I'm considering organizing a Campbell DNA project and would like to get a
sense of the interest. Any Campbell male can participate. Sorry, ladies,
the Y-STR DNA test that is planned is only passed down the paternal line.
However, your husband or father could provide the requisite cheek scraping.
The deal is as follows. Each participant would decide if they wanted to
participate in the 12 marker test or the 25 marker test. The cost of these
tests would be $99 and $169, respectively. 12 markers are sufficient to
determine whether or not two people are related. When participants match in
the 12 marker test, the test can be upgraded to 25 markers for a small
additional fee of $90. Other people feel that the 25 marker test is more
valid and may choose to go "all the way" with 25 markers at once.
All costs and communications would be directly between you and the testing
service (Family Tree DNA). There is no minimum level of participation.
I am also working to see if we could get DNA samples of some Campbell
"reference lines" such as (1) the Duke of Argyle, (2) Lord Neil of NJ, etc.
Ultimately, I'd like to use these tests to try to break through some of the
Pennsylvania Campbell lines of the 1700s that have me stumped. However, this
project might link various Campbell lines (PA, VA, NC, etc.) that have
heretofore only have been speculative.
I'm not an expert in this area, so people with questions should first look at
