I can tell you why it was spelled "Camel" when it should have been
"Campbell." They spelled it phonetically--as it sounds. My Grandma b. 1905 in
AL would tell you her maiden name was Camel when it was Campbell. It was all in the
pronunciation.

Check for Camel, Cumble, Gamble, Gamel, Kamel, Kamble, etc... don't let the
spelling stop you... my Missouri (USA) ancestor signed with an x on land
papers... his name was listed as Camel instead of Campbell... one son, James
Mehlander Campbell (b 1835-6 AL USA)had Campbell crossed out on one page of
his Civil War records and Camel written over it... not sure why, will never
know... but you have to check all spellings.

Subject: [CAMPBELL] Australian Campbells
Hi Listers
gr grandfather Hugh Cambell? (Campbell) born abt. 1864/66 Melbourne?
On his marriage certificate says he was born in Melbourne. (can't find)
Father Donald Campbell occ. blacksmith.
Mother Unknown
Hugh married Mary Ann Josephine Cox 17th September 1892 in St Kilda.
He has marked his marriage cert. with a X and Mary Ann has signed
on his behalf. presuming Hugh was illiterate, which could mean
Cambell is mispelt. All further family including Mary Ann (aka
Josephine) used Campbell.
Hope someone can help.
Thanks
Fran Campbell
