Concerning the need to find a death certificate. The state of California
put into effect an Anti-Genealogy Law which prohibits the public from
looking at Public records. Everything is Top-Secret now.
You can pay for a certified copy of a death certificate, and the official
delivery time is "Up to 2 years", but you must PROVE your relationship to
the deceased, such as : child, spouse, father, mother, sibling. A cousin of
an Uncle's Aunt, will not do it.
Death certificates are only as accurate as the person who is giving the info
to the offical. I am a Californian, so I have loads of California Death
Records, and many cases the information is wrong, I even have a BIRTH YEAR
which is wrong. But that isn't the State of California's fault, it is the
survivor who gave the errorneous data.
I also have an Uncle who died in Los Angeles with 2 separate identical death
records, only difference is the FIRST name. So it is thoughly possible to
have multiple records for the same individual.
I take it you have already gone to:
www.vitalsearch-ca.com which has births, death and marriages for the state
of California?? This is a VERY valuable website for California research.
It is FREE, but may ask for a password. Go ahead and fill the form and they
will send you via email a free password to use.
Obits for Los Angeles are virtually non-existant, due to the HUGE population
(bigger than many states). If you are not a movie star or celebrity,
probably there is NO obit, unless you live in a small sub-community, which
may have there own Public library which files obits.
I obtained my relatives obit from the Pasadena Public Library free of
charge, after I emailed them.
If you know his address, you could subscribe to:
CA-DEATH-INDEX-L(a)rootsweb.com request an obit look-up, or
CALOSANG-L(a)rootsweb.com this list is for Los Angeles and surrounding areas.
Also, you could ask for an obit look-up. It is worth a try.

Subject: CAMPBELL, Anthony Nevin ("Nev") PA>CA
SSDI states that an Anthony Campbell died 22 Feb 1963, in Los Angeles
(70). The
date of his birth, 23 Jan 1883 matches EXACTLY that of family bible
information. It further states the mother's maiden name is BENSEN. This
MAY
be
in error. MY Anthony's mother's name was Annie Adelia
DENSEL.
I find it unusual to have two Anthony Campbells born on the same date in
CA. I
believe Bensen is in error.
Is it possible to obtain an obit on this Anthony? . . . death cert?
"Nev" was an "interesting" chap. He was an accomplished boxer (early
1900s) in
the Lancaster/Philadelphia, PA area. He ran his own boxing school in
Lancaster
. . . and he wrote poetry (!) which was published by The American
Poets
Fellowship Society in 1953. Judging by some of his work, he was very much
pro-labor, and somewhat of a Socialist.
Family scuttlebutt says "Nev" went to CA (Hollywood) in an effort to have
one of
his poems turned into a cartoon, and never returned to PA. LA must
have
agreed
with him since one of his poems was titled, "I Love to Share Los
Angeles".
Can anyone offer help and/or suggestions? Thanks!!
