Thankyou for your advice Diarmid,
Have searched "many" Donalds (all spelling variations)
not knowing (only guessing) Donalds age, makes life difficult.
You would think Hugh could state his mothers name!! That
would have made my life a whole lot easier.
She must have disgraced them in some way, don't think we
will ever know. Can't find where Donald died, that would
help. Anyway, thanks again.
Fran :-)

Fran,
The spelling of Campbell shows many variations in Scotland also. It was
originally often spelt Cambel, as coming supposedly from the Gaelic for
'curved moutn' or 'cam buel' and the 'p' is believed to have been
added in
the early fourteen hundreds by Gaelic scribes who wanted to make sure that
it was understood to be a soft 'b' rather than an explosive one as in
'butter'.
I was wondering whether many ship's passenger lists survive in Australia,
as
they have for many North Atlantic ships to North America? While
there
were
always some Donald Campbells, it was not nearly so common a name as
Archibald, Colin, Neill, Dugald or Duncan. Of course every village in
Scotland once had a blacksmith and if Donald came from an industrial area
he
might more likely have been called a 'mechanic' or
'boilermaker' or some
such trade, so it is possible that he came from a rural area. The
counties
in Scotland where Campbells were most common were Argyll/Argyle,
Dunbarton,
Renfrew, Ayr, Perthshire and Inverness, although by the 1860s they
were
found all over Scotland. Of those only Renfrew became partly
industrialized
in the 19th century.
The most common port of departure from the west of Scotland would have
been
Greenock (for Glasgow until the Clyde was dredged and ships could get
up
to
Glasgow), although coastal vessels also left from Inverness,
Aberdeen,
Dundee and Leith (Edinburgh).
Northern Ireland is a possibility, but I would try Scotlanf first. Birth
registration was by the government from 1855 so from that date the records
are fairly complete.
You will probably know the site Scotlandspeople.

Campbell, Kilmelford, Argyll
