I'm sure you must already have this info - but just in case . . .
I started with trying to find James Robert and Rachel in Missouri
Jackson Twp, Buchanan Co MO, 26Oct1850
James R Campbell 46 NC
Rachael 51 NC
Margaret 12 NC
Armstead 8 NC
Caroline 26 NC
Emily Jane 4 NC
Henry 1 MO
Which told me that they moved from NC to MO between 1846-1849
I didn't find any James Campbells in Mecklenburg Co NC, but I did find
one that looked like a good probability in Iredell Co, on the north
border of Mecklenburg Co.
1840 Iredell Co NC
James R Campbell - - 1 1 - 1 1 1 1 - - - 1
That's a male 10-15, male 15-20, male 30-40, fem <5, fem 5-10, fem
10-15, fem 40-50. With Rachel being 5 years older, this would fit and
would also match the kids that are with them in MO in 1850 - minus a few
who probably stayed behind in NC.
In 1830 there is a James R in Rutherford Co, but he was 40-50, too old
to be your James R. Back in Iredell Co, however, there are two James
Campbells. (Plus an Archibald Campbell and a Millen Campbell on the same
census page as James Esq. James Jr is on the following page).
Since James and Rachel probably married between 1820-1830, I also
checked for Ervin and McCree families in the area. There were no Ervins
in Iredell Co, nor any in Mecklenburg Co. There were only two McCree
families in the entire state of NC - James A McCree and James P McCree -
and both lived in Iredell Co. Could it be an Irwin rather than Ervin?
There were several Irwins in Mecklenburg Co.
1830 Iredell Co NC
James Campbell Jr 1 1 - - 1 1 - - - 1
James Campbell Esq 2 2 1 2 - 1 1 - - - 1 2 - 1
James Jr and Rachel would both fit the 20-30 age group this census year,
so this would be a good possibility.
Iredell Co was formed in 1788 from Rowan Co. In 1771 Rowan and
Mecklenburg counties were having issues about where the borders between
them should be. (No one wanted to pay takes to either county - so it was
important to determine who lived in which county.) So if your records
have him born in Mecklenburg Co, you might want to check in Iredell and
Rowan as well for marriage records between James and Rachel.
One of the trails that it seems some Campbells took in the late 1700s
was from Craven Co to Bladen Co which is directly east (though not
bordering) of Mecklenburg Co. It includes an Archibald - so this might
be a clue to pursue in case the 1830 Arch'd turns out to be related to
your James. If the link will work, check out
usgenweb.com (related to
rootsweb so it should be okay to recommend them on this list)...

There were also McCrees in Bladen Co in 1790.
If you find she was an Irwin - here's a bit of trivia ... "His [Zebulon
Alexander] daughter Mary married Robert Irwin who was a signer of the
Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. Zebulon obtained deed for land
in Mecklenburg Co. NC 7 Jan, 1767 (300 acres) and 24 Feb. 1767 (unknown
quantity)"
Sorry I couldn't find a marriage record . . .

Subject: [CAMPBELL] James Robert Campbell
Seeking information on James Robert b. 5 Jan 1803 and wifes name was
Rachel. He died 23 June 1897 in Buchanan Co., MO. We have Rachel's last
name as Ervin, but not sure, for their son Alexander's middle name is
McCree (Alexander McCree Campbell) which I believe to be either his
mother's maiden name or his father's mother's middle name. We do not
know his father or mothers name, but I believe that the McCree/Campell
line came together in this family through the parents or grandparents.
There are several McCree/Campbell connections in other branches of the
family. Lived in Mecklenberg Co., NC. Another source states that James
Robert was born in WVa but I can find nothing that will prove that. We
have his birthplace as Mecklenberg Co., NC.
