Asunto: Re: [Campbell] Campbells from Coll, Mull & Tiree - Y-DNA matches
Mr. Campbell: my 2x Great Grand mother is Mary Jane Campbell she was born about 1839 (not
sure where), she married William Worling October 23, 1860 in Cappagh County Tyrone. The
marriage record says her father is James Campbell, James died February 28 1879 in Cappagh,
County Tyrone. The PRONI record shows Mary Worling present at death. By any chance are
these Campbell's part of your research. I have had a very hard time finding anything
other than what I have above. Mary Jane and William had a son named John Worlin born April
25 1865 in Ballymamullen, Cappagh, county Tyrone. He moved to Mount Holly New Jersey about
1890. Any help you can provide would be very much appreciated. Thank you John Woods.

Hello listners,
The earliest proof of my Campbell family in space-time is the family
of Donald Campbell m Marrion Maclean, sons Malcolm, Murdoch, Neil and
dau Christian, head tenant in Toraston, Isle of Coll, 1776.
We have documented a lot on this family ... and proven descendants
extended at times to Scotland, Australia (TAS, VIC, QLD & WA), NZ, USA
Louisiana (McFee, Lee, ...), Arkinsas (Salsbury ...) & Halifax, Pictou
Isl, Whycocomagh, Cape Breton, Manitoba (Geekie & Oliver), St Paul's Island, ...
The very strong family tradition is that this family descended from
the old house of Barbreck ...
We now have 5 documented Y-DNA samples of members of this family on
Kevin Campbell's FTDNA Campbell Group -- no 137 in his study. There
are samples from descendents of two sons of Donald, thus establishing
the Y-DNA values for him back at least to the 1740s. Every documented
descendant carries a very distinguishing DYS 390 marker with a value
of 27. This value seems very rare amongst most populations and we are
alone in this in Campbell study, though others approach with a value
of 26, some also from the Inner Hebrides. Another included in the
group is a very close match, though this value is 26. He is proven to
have come from Belfast, Ireland and arrived in South Carolina, ... We
also know that my gg grandfather Archibald Macarthur Campbell vent to
Virginia circa 1840 (en route after for Port Phillip, Australia), visiting family there.
Colin Campbell was Neil (tacksman of Sunipol then Treshnish, Mull)
eldest son. He went to Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) in 1820, later
settled near Keilor, Port Phillip, and finally returned to Scotland in
1852, and purchased the former Argyll properties on the Isle of Coll
(Cornaig & Caolas/Isle of Gunna) that had inherited by his two
cousins, John, son of Malcolm and Alexander, son of Murdoch. He also
bought (and built the stately
home?) of Achnacloich, near Oban, Lorn on his return.
He clearly had ties with the then Duke of Argyll and was involved in
efforts to resettle "starving highlanders" to Canada and Australia, as
these notices
indicate:

The Melbourne Argus, Victoria, Australia, Tue 27 July 1847
"Highland Destitution - Private letters from Scotland mention that
Colin Campbell, Esq, of Glengyle, on the Salt Water River, who is at
present absent on a visit to his native country, has been deputed by
the Marquess of Lorne, the representative of the noble house of
Argyll, to proceed to Canada for the purpose of making arrangements
there for the rescue of the starving Highlanders of Scotland from
otherwise certain death."

Port Philip Gazette and Settler’s Journal, Victoria, Australia, Sat 4
Dec
1847
"Emigration - We stated sometime ago that Mr. Colin Campbell, of this
place, intended to go out to Canada in charge of a number of the Duke
of Argyle's tenantry, but by later advices we have been informed that
the scheme was abandoned, in consequence of accounts having been
received that the emigrants in Canada were as bad off as the poor at home.
Mr. Colin Campbell had urged the Duke to send them to Port Philip
instead, which will we expect be the ultimate result."
