Hello, Everyone!
I hope that everyone is excited and can't wait until we honor "Boss Josh"
on Sunday, May 6th, at 3:00 PM. For those that do not know, the name of
the Cemetery where Joshua W. Campbell is buried is called the Elmer Massie
Cemetery. I was misinformed about its location, it is actually in Roseland,
Nelson County, VA.
Directions:
- From the traffic circle in Amherst take US 60 West (Lexington Turnpike)
- Go 5.7 miles
- RIGHT on Route 778 (Lowesville Road)
- Go 6.9 miles
- LEFT on Route 666 (Woodson Road) Turn is between Riverview Market &
Bridge crossing Piney River
- Immediate LEFT (.08 miles) on Route 629 (Little Piney River Road)
- Go 2.8 miles
- Go across bridge over Little Piney River
- 2nd road on RIGHT Look for green telephone box on right before road
- Keep to CENTER of road You will see 2 gates, one red (leads to old
Massie home place) and one white (?), road
to cemetery is between these 2 gates. Cemetery is about 100 yards up on
the hill.
- From Route 151 North (Patrick Henry Highway)
- Go 7.5 miles
- LEFT Route 778 (Lowesville Road)
- Go 2.8 miles
- RIGHT Route 666 (Woodson Road)
- Go .08 miles
- LEFT Route 629 (Little Piney River Road)
- Go 2.8 miles
- Go across bridge over Little Piney River
- 2nd road on RIGHT Look for green telephone box on right before road
- Keep to CENTER of road You will see 2 gates, one red (leads to old
Massie home place) and one white (?), road
to cemetery is between these 2 gates. Cemetery is about 100 yards up on
the hill.
The road to the Cemetery is only accessible by a 4 wheel drive vehicle.
Family Members will be available to take you up to the Cemetery. (Whoever
is arranging this, please contact me and let me know how many vehicles are
going to be working as escort and how many each vehicle will seat.) We are
trying to arrange for parking at the homeowner's property that lives
before the road to the Cemetery, and I will notify you once this is done. If at
all possible, please car pool to the Cemetery...especially if we do not
gain permission to park where I've mentioned above, because there is not much
room for cars to park along the road.
Feel free to bring blankets and chairs to sit on. Since the Cemetery is
on a slant, blankets would be better than chairs as there are not a lot of
level places available. Ladies may want to bring hand fans, if they have
them. Bring your cameras and video cameras, as I need someone to document
the Ceremony for me...so PLEASE REMEMBER TO SHARE WITH ME ANY PHOTOS OR VIDEO
THAT YOU CAPTURE. I will be wearing period clothing and should not be
seen with a camera in my hand...but don't get upset if you do see me with one.
Many are wondering what an Iron Cross Ceremony is...in a way, it is like a
Military Funeral. Prayers will be said, a poem & tribute will be read,
music will be played, there will be a rifle salute, a Memorial Flag given,
and it will end with TAPS. Wreaths will be placed on the grave, and if
someone will be kind enough to gather some wildflowers (or any flowers) the
Family can also place flowers on the grave. Boss Josh's Family tombstone does
not note his Confederate Service, so the Iron Cross is to show all that
pass by that he was a Confederate Soldier that has been recognized and honored
by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Attending the Ceremony gives
you a rare opportunity to also honor your Ancestor, Joshua W. Campbell, and
possibly learn something about him that you did not already know. You
will also be able to connect with relatives from the many Children that Boss
Josh had...and maybe learn that someone you have known your whole life is
actually a Cousin.
As of last count, we are expecting 65 people to attend. Below is the
current list. If anyone plans to attend and is not included on the list,
PLEASE contact me ASAP.
