Hello from Charleston, South Carolina!
I have a suggestion.
In the subject line for genealogy data can we use this format to communicate data?
[Firstname] [LASTNAME] ([birthyear] - [deathyear]) of [Birth Place]
Should I write concerning my ggg grandfather I would title subject:
Alonzo CAMPBELL (1824 - 1871) of Adamsville, Washington Co., New York
or with unknowns or suspect data
John or William CAMPBELL (1700 - ????) of Scotland
John CAMPBELL II (1727 - 1791) of ??/Northern England
Happy Oge Maidne!
David, when you're trying to pin down peripatetic, elusive ancestors,
you have to go with what you've got, and for those of us searching the
early years in NC/VA/MD, the best information we have is the region in
which our ancestors roamed (in case you haven't noticed, many Campbells
are not your normal stay-put-for-a-generation people).
To put "John CAMPBELL 1775-1857 of North Carolina" in a subject line
will not draw much attention or interest, as there were thousands of
North Carolinians by that name during that period. Further, I know who
my John Campbell was. What I'm looking for are Campbell families whose
ancestors lived in the same counties he was in during the same period so
that I can find John Campbell's family.
By comparing what I know about my Campbell with others whose families
were in the same places at the same times, I (and my correspondents)
might be able to zero in on the groups to which our Campbells belonged
and--with luck--find their parents and siblings.
For most lists, your suggestion is a good one, but for the Campbell list
with its on-the-move ancestors and maddeningly short list of given
names, the subject line format you suggest can often miss the point.
One truth I've learned from doing genealogy and searching for
information on a Campbell: Campbells ARE different!
Maureen
