there are also many Fresian dialects and there are villages whose dialect is
to this day still incomprehensible to another.
Scotland is full of regional dialects and the pronunciation of Campbell can
range.
When I was young I was often called Sawney Cawmel, but I have never seen
anyone not know how to spell it correctly.
The large variations in NA are I am sure due to the facts that many
immigrants could not write and also the interpretation of Immigration
Officials coming across an unfamiliar dialect.
It did not happen with just 'our' name.

My wifes family is Fresian, German north of the Netherlands in Germany
along
the coast. She was taught low German(lowlands) as a child. High German is
taught in the higher elevations of Germany(Alps) . My mothers family
comes from
the German/French border, where some French words are included.
