Hi Sawnee (grin).
I saw evidence of what you said with my Irish great grandmother. Her
marriage license said that she was a Dosey. She probably pronounced it
"Doe-see". Also probably her name was really Dorsey or Darcy, or D'Arcy. I
feel that she could not read or write and whatever the clerks put down just
stayed. It looked to me like the whole licence application including
witness names and parents' names were all written in the same handwriting,
leading me to believe that none of them were too adept at reading and
writing.

Dave,
there are also many Fresian dialects and there are villages whose dialect
is to this day still incomprehensible to another.
Scotland is full of regional dialects and the pronunciation of Campbell
can range.
When I was young I was often called Sawney Cawmel, but I have never seen
anyone not know how to spell it correctly.
The large variations in NA are I am sure due to the facts that many
immigrants could not write and also the interpretation of Immigration
Officials coming across an unfamiliar dialect.
It did not happen with just 'our' name.
Sandy
