Hello: You mentioned a "Hew" in your line of Campbell's. I have a Hugh
Campbell b abt 1694 in Galston, Ayre, Scotland. He had several sons one
named Andrew b Sept. 2, 1710 also in Galston. Just wondering if there is a
connection. Maybe an alternate spelling for the same name? Jean Bunch

Subject: [CAMPBELL] Campbells of Auchmannoch--Ayrshire, Parish of Sorn
Genealogy and notes taken from "History of the Counties of Ayr
and
Wigtown"
by James Paterson, vol 1--Kyle, Edinburgh: 1863
Auchmannoch is in the northern quarter of the parish of Sorn, near the
march
with Galston. A family named BROWN possessed part of it until the
early
1700s.
Arthur CAMPBELL of Auchmannoch, on 8 Aug 1565, had a renewed charter from
the Commendator of Melrose. His spouse, Margaret CUNINGHAME of
Caprington,
is mentioned in the charter.
George CAMPBELL, son of above, of Auchmannoch, had a charter form James
VI,
dated 20 Sept 1590.
Arthur CAMPBELL of Auchmannoch (son of George above), married 10 Nov 1606
to
Janet CAMPBELL, daughter of John CAMPBELL of Eshawburn. Arthur's
retour
is
dated in 1601. He is mentioned in the will of Robert CRAUFURD,
younger of
Smiddyshaw in 1616, whose wife's name was Margaret CAMPBELL. George
CAMPBELL of Killoch and Arthur CAMPBELL of Auchmannoch, were overseers
under
the deed. The will of Arthur's wife, Janet CAMPBELL, was
recorded in
1622
and mentions children: Arthur, Hew, Agnes, and Janet. Smiddyshaw
and
Montgarswood were cautioners. This Arthur CAMPBELL was also mentioned in
the will of John CAMPBELL, bailie of Mauchline, in 1622.
George CAMPBELL of Auchmannoch succeeded his father, Arthur, in 1637
(which
was apparently before the death of his father). George was
involved in
the support of the Presbyterian Church during the time of Charles I. He
took the field with General Leslie in 1638 and executed a will in 1639
where
he appointed the following trustees: John CAMPBELL of Eshawburn,
John
CAMPBELL of Killoch, and his father.
George CAMPBELL married Jean MURE, daughter of John MURE of
Stacklawhill
(descended from the Mures of Rowallan). They had two sons, Arthur
and
John,
designated as of Netherton. They also had a daughter, Jean, whose
name
appears in register of sasines 15 Dec 1694.
Arthur CAMPBELL of Auchmannoch became heir to his father, George, in 1668.
He was involved in the Covenanter movement and was fined by Middleton in
1662 and imprisoned at Strathaven. He married Margaret SCHAW, daughter of
John SCHAW of Kiers, in Carrick (afterwards of Dalton) in 1671. They were
the parents of four children: John, William, Allan, and Elizabeth.
William
and Allan died unmarried. Elizabeth married John MITCHELL of
Halglenmuir
on
6 Feb 1702. Arthur CAMPBELL died in 1703 and was succeeded by his
eldest
son,
John CAMPBELL of Auchmannoch had sasine of the lands on 31 Dec 1703. He
married Jean MITCHELL, daughter of Hugh MITCHELL of Dalgain (whose wife
was
Janet CAMPBELL, daughter of John CAMPBELL of Whitehaugh--see
previous
postings on Campbells of Fairfield). They had two sons, John and Arthur.
John CAMPBELL of Auchmannoch succeeded his father in 1740. He was a
merchant in Bristol for many years, died unmarried in Feb 1794, and was
succeeded by his brother, Arthur.
Arthur CAMPBELL of Auchmannoch, married Burella HUNTER, daughter of Robert
HUNTER of Pisgah (professor of Greek at the University of Edinburgh).
They
had five children: (1) John CAMPBELL, died unmarried in Calcutta in
the
service of the Hon. East India Company, (2) Robert CAMPBELL, who was the
heir when Paterson wrote his book, (3) Andrew CAMPBELL, Lieut Colonel in
the
East India Company. He succeeded Rev Dr. MITCHELL in the lands in
Avisyard
in the parish of Cumnock. He married Nicola Anna MAXWELL, daughter
of
Colonel MAXWELL of Birdstoun, county Donegal, and had a son, (4) Arthur
CAMPBELL, W. S., of Catrine, married a Miss BARSTOW, and had a son and
four
daughters. He purchased the Nether Catrine estate in 1852 from the
heirs
of
Colonel STEWART, and (5) Elizabeth CAMPBELL, married James CUTHBERT
of
Dalleagles. They had children, but they are not named. Arthur CAMPBELL
died in 1828 and as mentioned above was succeeded by his son, Robert.
