Based upon this email below, it doesn't look like the mentioned John
Campbell who married Nancy Shirley is in my line of Campbells.
Anyway, it is thought that our John Campbell was born in Scotland and ended
up in Eastern Kentucky. Could have stopped over for any number of years at
anyplace along the line.

counties.(compromising the West Augusta District)
Entered Valley Forge with 175 men assigned, 69 fit for duty, left Valley
Forge in May 1778 for Ft Pitt.
Previous engagements were: Northern New Jersey, Defense of Philadelphia,
Philadelphia-Monmouth.
Staff Officers:

From HeadQuarters near Passaic Falls, Oct 17, 1780 (at this time Lt Col
Richard Taylor was in the 11th VA Regiment and Lt Col Richard Campbell was
in the 9th VA Regiment) At this time, it was agreed that Taylor and Campbell
would exchange stations.
Land records show in 1799 the son (John Campbell) of Lt Col Richard Campbell
was given the land patent which was awarded to Lt Colonel Richard Campbell.
Richard Taylor was also awarded land in the Ohio Military tract.
"amendatory of the said Act, there is granted by the said United States unto
John Campbell, devisee of the said Richard Campbell"
"certain lands lying Northwest of the River Ohio, between the little Miami
and Sciota;"
