Diarmid,
As I'm sure you know, the IGI is part of the web site
of
familysearch.org, which is run by the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We've been doing
family history for years and years and years. I have
some files from a cousin that started this research in
the 1920s! All of those files were submitted to the
Church decades ago. Much of the IGI web-based
information comes from a concerted effort to digitize
those records. It has only been since 1991 that
information started being submitted electronically.
While at
familysearch.org, see the FamilySearch
Questions area of the site to find out what the IGI
is, why there are so many duplicate records,
correcting errors, avoiding errors yourself, etc.
Much love to my Campbell cousins,
Diana Dial Reynolds

For some years now the managers of the IGI have
evidently allowed anyone to
put material on the site. The quality of the
material is therefore entirely
dependent upon the accuracy of research of
individuals.
This suggests that while it is a useful means of
finding possible
connections, the only way to be sure whether what
you find is accurate, is
to then go to a documented source like
scontlandspeople or similar.
