Subject: Campbell Families of early Augusta Co, VA, USA
Information extracted from the history of the Tinkling Springs
Presbyterian
Church of Augusta County book "The Tinkling Spring Headwaters of
Freedom".
Mr. Lynden Harris sent me 3 attachments, copies of pages: 117, 150, and
172
of this book.
Rootsweb.com does not allow for attachments to be
posted on
the mailing list, so I have read these pages, and I will now summerize in
my
own words, what the essence of data was.
Page 117: John Campbell, of Tinkiling Spring, VA, immigrated from Irleand
to
America in 1726. His wife was Grace Hay. His estate was appraised in
Ornage Co VA.
Page: 150: Arthur Campbell was born 1742 in Augusta Co, VA. He settled at
Washington Co VA, his father and family later followed him there.
One of his sons was Col. John B. Campbell, who fell in battle, under
General
Scott.
General William Campbell, hero of King's Mountain, was born in Augusta
Co.,
VA, and he was the cousin of Arthur Campbell, as well as brother in
law to
Arthur Campbell
Page 172: There were 6 heads of the Campbell families in Tinkling Spring,
VA prior to 1750. They were:
1. Charles Campbell
2. David "
3. James "
4. John "
5. George "
6. William "
After 1750, there were only 3 of those 6 Campbell families left in the
area,
most had moved to SW VA.
The Campbell families were strictly Presbyterian.
John Campbell b. about 1743, was grandson of the immigrant John Campbell.
In 1765, he went and bought land near the Head Waters of the Holsten
River,
and called the land "Royal Oak". A few years later he moved
his family
there to settle.(Does not state the COUNTY this land is in.)
The group which came to Royal Oak to live, were:
1. The Father of John Campbell b. abt 1743, s/o John Campbell (m. Grace
Hay), the original immigrant.
2. The Mother of John Campbell b. abt 1743.
3. John Campbell b. abt 1743, grandson of John Campbell the immigrant
4. Arthur Campbell, younger brother of John b. abt 1743
5. Margaret Campbell, sister of John and Arthur
6. David Campbell, youngest son of John Campbell the immigrant.
7. Mary Hamilton, the wife of David Campbell, s/o John Campbell, the
immigrant.
8. The children of David and Mary Campbell:
James Campbell
David Campbell
Robert Campbell
Patrick Campbell
Mary Campbell (m. William Lockhart)
Martha Campbell
Sarah Campbell
Ann Campbell
To summerize this group: it was a Man named Campbell, his wife, and their
2
sons, and their daughter, and his youngest brother, and the wife of
this
brother, and the kids of this brother.
Does anyone see any relationship between these families mentioned, and
George Campbell, who married Caty, of Amherst Co VA, formerly of Albemarle
Co VA?
I 'think' these Tinkling Spring, VA Campbell families are totally
unrelated
to the George Campbell and Caty group of Amherst Co VA, but since I
don't
yet know the father of George, I can not say for sure.
I hope this information helps someone here.
Best regards,
Lilly Martin
