Stefan,
The Campbells of Oib -
Oib was a farm owned by Campbells and in a county where so many people were
called Campbell - and with only a limited range of favoured Christian names,
it was common to identify families by the name of the farms on which they
lived. The head of the family might even be addressed as 'Oib' - or if his
name was Archibald, 'Archie Oib' to distinguish him from several other
Archibald Campbells.
I have heard of Oib in relation to a Campbell family but at present don't
know where it is or anything about the family. However if you want to write
to a friend of mine they might be able to advise you. Duncan Beaton, 77
Back o' Hill, Houston, Renfrewshire PA6 7LE, Scotland. There is a chance
that he might know. He comes from Argyll and is a good local historian. I
have an idea that the Oib Campbells were related to the Campbells of
Duntroon (now spelt Duntrune since the little castle passed to the MacCallum
Malcolms of Poltalloch in 1792).
Diarmid

Subject: [CAMPBELL] What does "Oib Campbell" mean?
Hi,
In the bapistism records for North Knapdale, Argyllshire, Scotland I
found a passage like this:
Donald lawfull son of Arch Campbell & Amelia Campbell Oib Campbell
Born 6th June 1930
What does the "Oib Campbell" mean. Is it a town, a title, or what?
