Thank you Diarmid,
Let the record show...Campbell's were not the very earliest of settlers on
Jamaica, and were not indigenous people...but they were very close as far as
the ' white man' goes. They started out as Caucasians plantation people;
owned slaves, inter-bred and had natural children by their slaves woman. The
children of these relationships were known as Mulatos, with last names being
Campbell in a lot of cases. 2 have written letters to me recently seeking
information on their paternal lines back to Scotland. There is also a
Jamaica List if you wish to belong and ask Campbell questions. I am
currently researching the number of slaves per Campbell plantation and I am
getting numbers of 350 - 450 ...does that compares to Virginia, I am not
sure?
The information was gathered from a Jamaica resource librarian from the
National Library of Jamaica and I posted all that came with it and here
again are the sources I was offered:
Source: List of the Landholders in the Island of Jamaica 1754
Source: Handbook of Jamaica 1923 pg. 668
I have no further serial numbers or quotes etc. However here is also the
full details of the institution and one may write K. Watson or E. Edwards
and get numerous Jamaica Campbell facts free.
